Man Arrested in Mississippi Woman’s Death as Homicide Investigation Continues

Mother of Four Found Hanging Behind Abandoned Mississippi Home as Man Faces Murder Charge
The death of a 29-year-old Mississippi mother has been ruled a homicide more than a month after her body was discovered behind an abandoned house in Jackson.
Tasia Fortune, a mother of four, was found hanging from a tree behind the abandoned property on August 3, 2026. Police initially investigated the circumstances surrounding her death, but the case took a significant turn after the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office officially ruled her death a homicide on September 10.

The following day, Jackson police arrested 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff and charged him with murder in connection with Fortune’s death.
Authorities have not released many details about what led investigators to Ratliff. Police said he had an “association” with Fortune, but officials have not disclosed the specific nature of their relationship or explained whether they knew each other personally.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said the investigation remains active and warned that additional arrests could be possible as detectives continue working to determine what happened to Fortune.
A motive has not been publicly released.

Authorities have also not disclosed whether DNA evidence played a role in identifying Ratliff as a suspect. It remains unclear what other evidence investigators may have gathered during the weeks between Fortune’s death and Ratliff’s arrest.
For Fortune’s family, the medical examiner’s ruling brought a devastating revelation to a case that had initially remained unexplained. The circumstances surrounding the death of a young mother of four are now being investigated as a homicide.
Ratliff has been charged with murder, but the charge is an allegation and does not constitute a conviction. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
As detectives continue examining the evidence, many questions remain unanswered, including the circumstances that led to Fortune’s death, the nature of her connection to Ratliff and what investigators believe may have motivated the killing.
Police have urged anyone with information relevant to the case to come forward as the investigation continues.
