HE WAS ONLY 2 — PETER MULCAIRE’S FIRST DAYS OF PRESCHOOL ENDED IN A TRAGEDY THAT SHOCKED HIS COMMUNITY

Peter Mulcaire had only just begun preschool and was discovering the world around him. Days later, his family was preparing to say goodbye to their little boy after he was struck by a jeep while playing near his home.

A NORMAL CHILDHOOD MOMENT TURNED TRAGIC

Two-year-old Peter Mulcaire was playing on a small toy tractor near his home in Abbey Court, Rathkeale, County Limerick, Ireland, shortly before 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, when he was struck by a jeep.

The toddler suffered catastrophic injuries in the collision.

He was initially taken for emergency treatment before being transferred by air ambulance to hospital. Despite efforts to save him, Peter was pronounced dead later that afternoon.

The vehicle involved did not remain at the scene.

Gardaí later arrested a man in his 30s at another location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant. He was arrested for the purpose of providing a blood or urine sample and was subsequently released pending analysis. The investigation remains ongoing.

HE HAD ONLY JUST STARTED PRESCHOOL

What makes the tragedy even more heartbreaking for Peter’s family is how recently he had reached a milestone that should have marked the beginning of a happy new chapter.

Peter had started attending a local preschool only days before the collision.

His older brother, Jim, who had also recently started primary school, reportedly walked Peter into his first preschool class. At his funeral Mass, Father Eamonn Fitzgibbon described the moment as Peter beginning a “new adventure.”

Peter’s mother, Kerrie, had shared a photograph of her smiling son on his first morning, standing beneath a balloon celebrating his first day of preschool.

Instead of watching him grow through his school years, his family is now left with photographs and memories of those precious final days.

REMEMBERED AS HIS FAMILY’S “SUNSHINE”

At Peter’s funeral, loved ones remembered him as a joyful, energetic little boy whose smile could brighten a room.

Father Fitzgibbon told mourners that Peter had left an impression on everyone he met and described him as a “ray of sunshine.”

His favorite songs, including “You Are My Sunshine” and “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” were played during the service.

Family members also placed personal reminders of Peter’s short life beside his coffin, including his buggy and school bag. Items connected to his love of animals were also included, reflecting the little boy’s affection for his dogs and ponies.

Some mourners wore shirts bearing Peter’s photograph and the words “Forever 2.” Others attended dressed as characters from cartoons he loved, including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol.

A COMMUNITY LEFT HEARTBROKEN

The loss of Peter sent shockwaves through Rathkeale.

A community fun day that had been scheduled for the following day was cancelled out of respect for the toddler and his grieving family. Friends, relatives and neighbors shared tributes online, remembering Peter as a beloved child and offering support to his parents.

Peter’s parents, Kerrie and James, were joined in mourning by his brother Jim, baby sister Delilah, grandparents and a large extended family.

His funeral notice described the little boy as their “beautiful little boy” and “forever our little angel.”

THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

Gardaí continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Peter’s death.

Officers have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who was travelling through the Abbey Court area around the time of the incident to come forward.

Investigators have also sought dashcam, CCTV and doorbell footage that could help establish exactly what happened in the moments before and after the collision.

A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support Peter’s family as they navigate the devastating loss.

For a little boy whose life had only just begun, Peter’s story ended far too soon.

But for the family and community who loved him, the memories of his smile, his playful spirit and his first days of preschool will remain.

Forever two. Forever loved.
