Seven months after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Arizona home, a new report is raising troubling questions about what happened during the earliest days of the investigation.

Nancy vanished on February 1.

Blood matching Nancy’s DNA was later identified at the residence, while surveillance footage captured a masked person approaching the home and tampering with her doorbell camera. Authorities have treated the case as an abduction.

But according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, the investigation may have been complicated by a series of early decisions, delays and disagreements between local and federal authorities.

One of the most significant issues involved alleged ransom messages that surfaced shortly after Nancy disappeared.

A report cited by Entertainment Weekly said investigators may have received a ransom demand just one day after Nancy vanished — one that allegedly claimed she was “safe but scared.”

The question now is not simply whether the messages were legitimate.

It is whether something could have been done differently in those fir
