BEHIND THE HORNS: HOW ANGELINA JOLIE’S DAUGHTER SAVED A FAMOUS MALEFICENT SCENE

When Disney’s Maleficent was in production, Angelina Jolie transformed completely into the iconic villain. Equipped with massive horns, sculpted cheekbones, pale face paint, and sharp claws, her appearance was a masterpiece of movie magic. However, that high level of realism brought an unexpected challenge on set: the young children cast to play three-year-old Princess Aurora were genuinely terrified of her.

Whenever Jolie stepped onto the set in full costume, the child actors refused to approach her. The transformation was so convincing that even her own son, Pax, panicked when he first saw her in full makeup, running away in tears until she removed pieces of the prosthetics to prove she was still his mother.

Production needed a child who could look at the dark fairy without fear, and the solution came from within Jolie’s own family. Her young daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, was entirely unfazed by the terrifying appearance. Recognizing her mother behind the horns, contact lenses, and costume, Vivienne walked straight up to her, smiling and acting perfectly natural. Because of this genuine comfort, Vivienne was officially cast as young Princess Aurora.

Her children also helped shape Maleficent’s iconic voice. Jolie tested various voices while giving her kids baths at home. When she tried a deep, dramatic tone that made them laugh uncontrollably, she knew she had found the perfect sound.

What millions saw on screen as a terrifying Disney villain was, to one little girl, simply her mom.
