Dominick Cebula, 13, was swimming at Cunningham Falls State Park on July 26 when something unexpected happened beneath the water.

He was looking at fish when a beaver suddenly attacked.

The animal latched onto his chest and refused to let go.

Dominick grabbed the beaver’s head and one of its legs, desperately trying to pull it away.

But the animal fought back.

It reportedly shook its head violently while still attached to the boy.

For a few terrifying moments, Dominick was trapped in the water with the animal.

Then he managed to break free.

But the nightmare wasn’t over.

As he backed away, the beaver attacked again — this time biting his right hand.

Dominick fought it off a second time.

And this time, he got away.

🚁 He was airlifted to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where doctors treated the serious injuries to his chest and hands.

But there was another terrifying discovery.

The beaver was captured and later tested positive for rabies.

That meant Dominick needed emergency rabies post-exposure treatment in addition to treatment for his physical injuries.

And the damage was far more serious than anyone initially realized.

Dominick suffered significant injuries, including nerve damage, and ultimately underwent three surgeries to repair the wounds to his chest and hands.

For his family, a place that had once been part of a cherished tradition suddenly became the setting of one of the most frightening days of their lives.

Dominick’s family had reportedly been visiting the park for about 30 years.

No one expected a routine summer swim to end with an airlift, emergency treatment, multiple surgeries and a fight against possible rabies exposure.

Yet Dominick survived.

And despite everything he went through, he eventually recovered enough to start high school and celebrate his birthday.

His father said the experience has changed how the family will view encounters with wildlife.

Because the most frightening part of this story may be how quickly an ordinary moment changed.
