BEYOND ACCESSIBILITY: HOW SIX FRIENDS CARRIED A DREAM ACROSS EUROPE

Kevan Chandler grew up facing severe physical limits due to spinal muscular atrophy type 2, a progressive condition causing severe muscle weakness. Weighing around 65 pounds, Kevan relied continuously on a wheelchair for basic mobility. Yet, he refused to let physical boundaries restrict his desire to see the world.

The idea of exploring places beyond normal accessibility began in 2013, when a group of close friends improvised a specialized backpack to carry Kevan through the underground sewers of Greensboro, North Carolina. The success of that daring underground outing sparked a much larger ambition. If they could navigate dark subterranean tunnels together, they wondered what else might be possible.

In 2016, that question took them across the Atlantic to France, England, and Ireland. The group modified a sturdy child-carrier frame with customized padding and reinforced support so Kevan could ride safely. For three grueling weeks, his friends took turns carrying him on their backs, serving as his legs through historic streets and rugged landscapes.

Their stops carried deep personal meaning. In France, they visited Samois-sur-Seine to honor legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, whose perseverance after severe hand injuries had long inspired Kevan. In England, they explored literary landmarks tied to iconic authors like J.M. Barrie. The ultimate physical test came on Skellig Michael, an Irish island featuring roughly 600 steep, uneven stone steps rising dramatically out of the Atlantic Ocean. Step by step, swapping turns under heavy strain, the friends carried Kevan to the ancient monastery at the summit.

The voyage was never about hiding disability; it was about honoring interdependent strength. Following their return, Kevan authored “We Carry Kevan” and established a global nonprofit organization bearing the same name. Today, the foundation develops specialized backpacks and resources, empowering families worldwide to overcome physical barriers. Kevan’s journey proved that true freedom does not come from total independence, but from the courage to rely on a community willing to carry your dreams forward together.
