Harry Dennis was just 11 years old when his life was tragically cut short in December 2022.

He was traveling in a vehicle when a scaffolding board became detached from another vehicle, creating a deadly hazard on the road.

The board struck the vehicle Harry was traveling in, killing the young boy.

For his family, the loss was unimaginable.

But from that devastating moment came a message his mother has continued to repeat: drivers must never underestimate the importance of securing a load properly.

ONE MOMENT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The tragedy happened when scaffolding being transported by another vehicle was not adequately secured.

A safety briefing later used Harry’s death as a stark example of how quickly an unsecured load can become a danger to completely innocent road users.

According to the briefing, the driver later blamed a lack of training, while the judge concluded that he had likely been driving similar vehicles for many years. The driver was sentenced to four years in prison.

For Harry’s family, however, no sentence could undo what had happened.

A young boy who should have had decades ahead of him was suddenly gone.

 HARRY’S NAME LIVES ON

Harry’s death has continued to be remembered during UK road-safety campaigns focused on unsecured loads.

Police forces have taken part in Operation Rule, an annual campaign highlighting the dangers posed by poorly secured equipment and commercial-vehicle loads.

The campaign exists in memory of Harry and is designed to remind drivers that even a seemingly small mistake can have devastating consequences.

Recent police operations have again highlighted situations in which loose scaffolding or other equipment became dangerous projectiles on busy roads.

In one incident highlighted by Gwent Police, a loose scaffolding pole was propelled into a vehicle after the van carrying it braked suddenly. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

 A MOTHER’S MESSAGE

For Harry’s mother, remembering her son is about more than grief.

It is also about prevention.

Her continuing campaign asks drivers to take those extra moments before setting off — checking straps, securing equipment and making absolutely certain that nothing can break loose.

Because those few extra seconds could mean the difference between arriving safely and changing another family’s life forever.
