PC Matthew Blades was remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and a police officer who gave his life serving others. But at his funeral, one small detail on the hearse carried a message that broke hearts.

PC Matthew Blades, 37, should have been coming home to his wife and his two young sons.

Instead, on September 9, his family and hundreds of police officers gathered in Hartlepool to say their final goodbye.

Matthew was one of two Cleveland Police officers killed in the devastating A66 collision near Middlesbrough on August 22.

His colleague, PC Tom Clough, 38, also lost his life in the crash.

But as Matthew’s funeral procession made its way through his hometown, one heartbreaking tribute immediately stood out.

TWO WORDS FOR A FATHER

On top of Matthew’s hearse was a white and red floral tribute spelling one simple word: “Dad.”

For the married father of two boys, aged six and eight, the tribute carried a deeply personal meaning.

It was a final reminder that behind the uniform was not simply a police officer.

He was someone’s husband.

He was someone’s best friend.

And most importantly, he was Dad.

The floral tribute was visible as the hearse approached St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Hartlepool, where hundreds of police officers and members of the public gathered to pay their respects.

A SEA OF POLICE OFFICERS

The funeral became an extraordinary show of respect.

Standard bearers representing police forces from across the United Kingdom attended the service.

Hundreds of officers lined Hutton Avenue outside the church, while members of the public gathered along the route to say goodbye.

Four mounted police officers stood near the church, while four pipers and a drummer accompanied the funeral procession.

As Matthew’s coffin, draped in the Union Flag, was carried into the church, “Amazing Grace” was played.

For his colleagues, it was a painful farewell to a man they had served alongside.

Matthew’s family remembered him not simply for his work as an armed response officer, but for the role he played at home.

His wife described the devastating loss of the “heart of the family” and spoke about the memories that would remain.

Matthew’s two sons were left without the father who had been at the center of their young lives.

A tribute released by the family described him as a beloved husband and devoted father, promising that his children would grow up knowing what an incredible dad he was.

And the message on the hearse seemed to capture everything in a single word:
