What initially appeared to be a missing-child search has since developed into a major crime investigation, with police saying they no longer believe Gus simply wandered away.

THE SEARCH FOR A LITTLE BOY

Gus disappeared from the sprawling sheep property while he was playing near the family homestead.

Emergency crews, police officers, State Emergency Service volunteers, Australian Defence Force personnel and other search teams were involved in an enormous operation across the remote landscape.

Investigators searched large areas surrounding the property, including dams, mine shafts and difficult-to-access sections of outback terrain.

Despite the scale of the operation, Gus has never been found.

A single footprint was among the evidence publicly reported during the early stages of the search, but investigators have not located the little boy or confirmed what happened to him.

THEN THE CASE CHANGED

On February 5, 2026, South Australia Police announced a major development.

The disappearance was formally declared a major crime.

Police said investigators had identified inconsistencies and discrepancies in information provided during the investigation.

A person who lived at Oak Park Station had withdrawn their cooperation with police and was now considered a suspect in Gus’s disappearance.

Authorities stressed that Gus’s parents were not suspects.

Police also executed a search warrant at the property and seized a vehicle, motorcycle and electronic devices.

POLICE NOW BELIEVE GUS MAY BE DEAD

The most heartbreaking development came when investigators explained their working theory.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said police had effectively ruled out the possibility that Gus simply wandered away from the property.

They had also ruled out an abduction by a stranger.

Instead, investigators said they believed Gus may have died and that someone known to the little boy could have been responsible — either deliberately or accidentally.

But there is still no body.
