A Smith County mother and daughter have been arrested after three dogs in their care 𝖽𝗂𝖾𝖽 following what authorities describe as extreme, prolonged neglect.

Deputies with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office were called to the 4000 block of County Road 390 on June 11 after receiving a report of a dog that had died while confined inside a metal crate. When officers arrived, a resident told them there were two dogs that had died and two living dogs confined in the crates.

Inside, deputies discovered the remains of two dogs along with a third dog that was severely malnourished and suffering from a serious infestation, which investigators immediately called for emergency intervention.

The resident told deputies the animals were strays her mother had taken in over the past year but had since stopped caring for, leaving the dogs confined without any “reasonable access to food or water.”

Animal control officers removed the two surviving dogs and rushed them for treatment. One of them later passed away due to the extent of the neglect.

Investigators say 25-year-old Adrecia Roy admitted she knew one dog had already 𝖽𝗂𝖾𝖽 and that she placed another surviving dog into the same crate. Roy, and her mother, Miranda Hawkins, were both then taken into custody and charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals.

Both women were booked into the Smith County Jail, where they remain on $200,000 bond.
