Tina Turner spent 27 years with Erwin Bach before they finally married, but four years later, he gave her a gift no wedding vow could ever match: one of his own kidneys.

The couple first met in 1986, when the German music executive was sent to pick her up at an airport, sparking an immediate connection that grew into the longest relationship of Tina’s life. After nearly three decades together, they officially tied the knot in Switzerland in 2013. However, hardship followed shortly after. Within weeks of the wedding, Tina suffered a stroke, followed by a diagnosis of intestinal cancer. Worse yet, decades of unmanaged high blood pressure had quietly destroyed her kidney function, which plummeted to around 20% by December 2016. Faced with the prospect of lifelong dialysis, an overwhelmed Tina began considering assisted dying.

That was when Erwin stepped in with an astonishing proposal: he wanted to donate his kidney to her. Tina was initially overwhelmed and tried to talk him out of it, worried about the long-term impact on his health. But Erwin remained steadfast, insisting he wanted no other life than the one they shared.

In April 2017, the transplant was successfully performed. Despite facing complications and rejection scares during recovery, the organ saved her life, granting her six more peaceful years alongside Erwin in Switzerland before her passing in May 2023 at age 83. The icon who once sang “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” ultimately spent her final decades with a man who proved that true love is defined not by words, but by sacrifice.
