“THE CAR CRASHED THROUGH THE BARRIER AND INTO THE RIVER” — THREE TEENAGERS, JACKSON DUKE, LUKE ETHERIDGE AND ZARA SHAW, DIE IN SUNDERLAND TRAGEDY
Three young lives were lost after a car entered the River Wear in Sunderland. As an inquest begins to examine what happened, families, classmates and the wider community are left grieving futures that ended far too soon.
A devastating incident in Sunderland has left families mourning three teenagers who died after the car they were travelling in plunged into the River Wear.
Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, both 16, were inside a black Audi A3 when it left the road near Panns Bank, close to Wearmouth Bridge, shortly before 1:30 p.m. on September 29, 2026.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after members of the public reported seeing the vehicle enter the water. A major rescue operation followed, involving police officers, divers and other emergency responders.
A fourth teenager, a 17-year-old boy, managed to escape from the submerged vehicle and was taken for medical treatment. The other three teenagers were later recovered from the car by specialist divers.
Despite the emergency response, all three teenagers died.
THREE YOUNG LIVES REMEMBERED
Jackson, Luke and Zara were students at Sunderland College, and news of their deaths sent shockwaves through their families, friends and classmates.
Jackson was 17, while Luke and Zara were just 16. Each had a life ahead of them, with experiences still to come, ambitions to pursue and memories yet to make.
Northumbria Police expressed its condolences to their families and asked the public to respect their privacy as they faced an unimaginable loss.
The tragedy also affected the wider Sunderland community, where residents came together to remember the teenagers and support those closest to them.
WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THE CAR ENTERED THE RIVER?
Police received reports shortly before 1:30 p.m. that a black Audi A3 had left the road at Panns Bank and entered the River Wear.
The vehicle was subsequently recovered from the water during a specialist operation.
Investigators are working to establish the circumstances that led to the crash, including who was driving at the time.
A 17-year-old boy who survived the incident was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was later released on bail while enquiries continued. An arrest is not a finding of guilt, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities have urged people not to speculate about the incident, particularly on social media, out of respect for the families and everyone affected.
THE INQUEST BRINGS FURTHER DETAILS
On October 12, separate inquest hearings were opened into the deaths of Jackson, Luke and Zara.
The coroner heard that the provisional findings from post-mortem examinations were consistent with drowning.
The hearings also confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by Northumbria Police. The inquests were adjourned until January 21, 2027, while further enquiries continue.
The proceedings are expected to help establish the facts surrounding the deaths, although many questions remain unanswered at this stage.
A CITY UNITED IN GRIEF
The impact of the tragedy reached beyond the teenagers’ immediate families.
At Sunderland’s Premier League match against Brighton, players wore black armbands and supporters joined a minute’s applause in memory of Jackson, Luke and Zara.
For many, the tribute was a way to honour three young people whose deaths had touched an entire city.
Behind the police statements and courtroom proceedings are parents who have lost their children, friends struggling to understand what happened and classmates facing the absence of people they expected to see every day.
No words can undo that loss.
As the investigation continues, the families and friends of Jackson, Luke and Zara are left to hold on to their memories while awaiting answers about the events that changed their lives forever.
May Jackson Duke, Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw rest in peace.
