BOUND TOGETHER, LIVING APART: THE EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY OF CARMEN AND LUPITA ANDRADE

Carmen and Lupita Andrade learned to walk before fully understanding what made their lives different. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, in 2000 as conjoined twins joined at the torso, they share a pelvis, reproductive system, and certain internal structures, though each possesses her own heart, lungs, and stomach. Early on, doctors determined that surgical separation was not a viable option.

In 2001, the non-profit organization Healing the Children Northeast brought the family to Connecticut for urgent medical treatment. The sisters remained in the United States and began physical therapy. Since Carmen controls one leg and Lupita controls the other, taking a single step required extraordinary coordination. By age four, through incredible teamwork, they learned to walk together.

Growing up, their distinct personalities quickly emerged. Carmen was vocal and outgoing, aspiring to work in veterinary medicine, while Lupita was reserved and drawn to comedy writing. They attended local public schools, graduating from Nonnewaug High School in 2018. Over time, they began sharing their unique journey publicly, creating online content and answering questions about their lives.

In 2020, Carmen met Daniel McCormack on Hinge. Unlike others, Daniel focused on getting to know her rather than asking invasive questions about her body. He also built a strong, respectful bond with Lupita, who encouraged the relationship. In October 2024, Carmen and Daniel married in a quiet ceremony in New Milford, Connecticut.

Lupita, who identifies as aromantic and asexual, views Daniel as a brother. The trio manages personal boundaries with deep mutual respect. Today, the sisters continue to hike, travel, and share their lives while maintaining their individuality. Their story stands as a testament to the fact that two distinct individuals can share a single body while building entirely separate lives.
