THEY MARRIED JUST THREE MONTHS AFTER MEETING — MORE THAN FOUR DECADES LATER, STEVE AND JEAN GREEN ARE STILL TOGETHER
For Steve and Jean Green, their love story began with a whirlwind romance — and somehow grew into a partnership lasting more than four decades.
The couple, who became familiar faces to viewers through Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet, have spent much of their married life at Stoneybrough Farm near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, building a family and working side by side.
Jean was just 27 when she met Steve, who was 50 at the time. Their relationship developed remarkably quickly, and just three months and 10 days after their first meeting, they married at St Mary’s Church in Thirsk.
What began as a whirlwind romance would become one of the most enduring relationships featured on the popular farming and veterinary programme.
A LOVE STORY THAT STARTED UNEXPECTEDLY
Steve and Jean’s paths crossed through Jean’s family.
Steve had employed Jean’s brother, and that connection eventually brought the two of them together.
Neither could have known at the time that their first meeting would lead to decades of marriage, family life and shared memories.
But the couple quickly discovered a connection.
Within just a few months, they had decided to get married.
Their wedding was relatively simple, with around 50 guests gathering for afternoon tea after the ceremony.
It was the beginning of a life that would be closely tied to the countryside and farming.
BUILDING A LIFE AT STONEYBROUGH FARM
Steve and Jean have spent more than five decades connected with Stoneybrough Farm.
North Yorkshire Archives has documented the remarkable history of the property, tracing it through old maps, deeds and trade directories.
The earliest reference to Stoneybrough as a farm dates back to 1890, while records show that Steve Green’s family purchased the property in 1944.
For Steve and Jean, however, the farm became much more than a piece of Yorkshire history.
It became their home.
It was where they raised their family, cared for livestock and built their lives together.
Their daughter, Sarah, also became part of the family story.
THEIR LIFE ON THE YORKSHIRE VET
Viewers eventually came to know Steve and Jean through The Yorkshire Vet, where they became popular farming clients of veterinarian Peter Wright.
Their appearances offered something beyond veterinary stories.
They gave audiences a glimpse into a couple whose lives were deeply connected to one another and to the farm they had worked on for decades.
Their warmth, humour and unmistakable personalities made them memorable figures among the show’s farming families.
In 2019, a special episode titled “Meet the Greens” celebrated the couple’s 40th wedding anniversary and followed them as they prepared to renew their vows on the farm.
AFTER 40 YEARS, THEY SAID “I DO” AGAIN
Renewing their vows was more than a television moment.
It was a chance for Steve and Jean to look back at the extraordinary journey they had shared.
Four decades earlier, they had married after knowing each other for only a few months.
Now they were standing together again, surrounded by memories of the life they had built.
Steve described Jean as the person who had made him incredibly happy, while Jean recalled the magical feeling she experienced when she first saw him.
The ceremony offered viewers a rare glimpse of the affection that remained between them after so many years together.
“WE’RE MORE IN LOVE NOW THAN EVER”
Perhaps the simplest description of their relationship came from Jean herself.
After more than four decades together, she said:
“We’re more in love now than ever.” ❤️
It is a remarkably simple sentence, but it captures what has made the couple’s story so appealing to viewers.
Their relationship has not been built around glamorous holidays or a life away from responsibility.
It has been built around ordinary days.
Early mornings.
Farm work.
Family.
Animals.
Difficult decisions.
And the quiet companionship of having the same person beside you through all of it.
THEIR FARM HAS CHANGED — AND SO HAVE THEY
The Greens’ life has not remained untouched by the challenges facing modern farming.
Over the years, they have faced difficult decisions about the future of their farm and livestock.
One particularly emotional chapter came when they had to sell their dairy herd — a moment that was later remembered as one of the most difficult periods in their farming story.
Yet their connection to the land remained.
In 2025, Jean returned to North Yorkshire Archives with Peter Wright to explore the history of Stoneybrough Farm.
Together, they examined historic maps, deeds and records that revealed how the area surrounding their farm had changed over more than a century.
For Jean, looking through those records was also a way of understanding the place that had shaped so much of her and Steve’s life.
STILL MAKING MEMORIES TOGETHER
Their story has also taken them beyond the boundaries of their farm.
Through The Yorkshire Vet and its spin-off programming, viewers have seen Steve and Jean experience places and activities that were different from their normal rural routine.
Those adventures became another part of their shared memories.
But perhaps the most meaningful aspect of their relationship is not where they have travelled.
It is the fact that they have continued to experience life together.
After decades of marriage, they are still curious about the world around them and still willing to make new memories.
A PARTNERSHIP BUILT OVER DECADES
Steve and Jean’s story is not simply about the fact that they married quickly.
It is about what happened afterwards.
A three-month courtship became a marriage lasting more than 40 years.
A marriage became a family.
A family became part of a working farm.
And that farm eventually became familiar to millions of television viewers.
Their lives have included difficult moments as well as happy ones, but the couple have continued to face those changes side by side.
That may be why Jean’s words about their relationship feel so powerful.
After everything they have experienced, she still says they are “more in love now than ever.”
THE QUIET ROMANCE OF GROWING OLD TOGETHER
There is something particularly touching about watching two people who have spent so much of their lives together still finding happiness in one another.
Steve and Jean did not know what their future would look like when they married after just three months.
They could not have predicted the years of farming ahead, the family they would build, the challenges they would face — or the fact that cameras would eventually invite millions of people into their world.
But more than four decades later, their story continues.
The farm has changed.
The countryside has changed.
Their lives have changed.
Yet the partnership at the centre of it all remains.
For viewers of The Yorkshire Vet, Steve and Jean Green have become a reminder that sometimes the most extraordinary love stories are built from very ordinary things:
working hard, staying together, raising a family, making memories — and continuing to choose the person beside you. ❤️
