PRO-AGING IN HOLLYWOOD: JAMIE LEE CURTIS REJECTS THE PRESSURE TO STAY YOUNG

Jamie Lee Curtis has spent most of her life in an industry obsessed with youth. At 63, she decided she was tired of one phrase in particular: “anti-aging.” Speaking with Maria Shriver in 2022 about how society treats growing older, especially for women, she declared that the term should be erased entirely, stating, “I am pro-aging.”

Her perspective was clear and grounded: aging is not something to fight or hide. Instead, she wants to age with intelligence, grace, dignity, verve, and energy. This belief did not stem from immunity to pressure. Curtis has openly acknowledged undergoing cosmetic procedures and trying Botox earlier in her career after a comment was made about her eyes on a film set. Looking back, she realized those procedures never gave her what she hoped for.

Over time, her approach shifted completely. Rather than trying to erase every sign of age, Curtis embraced open acceptance. She even admitted to avoiding studying herself too closely in mirrors to keep self-criticism at bay.

Her philosophy extends directly into her acting work. For her Oscar-winning role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Curtis intentionally refused shapewear or filming tricks designed to alter her body’s natural shape, letting her character exist authentically on screen.

Now in her late sixties, she continues to view aging as a privilege rather than a decline to hide or a battle to fight against wrinkles—it is simply another stage of being alive.
