A HEAVY TOLL BEYOND SURVIVAL: THE STORY OF NICOLE KLEINSASSER
At age 25, Nicole experienced persistent, severe pain around an upper molar that initially appeared normal on dental X-rays. Antibiotics failed to help, and progressive bone loss in her upper jaw eventually led to a sobering diagnosis: salivary gland cancer. Treatment was aggressive, requiring a partial maxillectomy, a customized dental obturator to separate her oral and nasal cavities, and 30 days of radiation that caused severe lockjaw. During her recovery, she also endured the painful breakdown of her marriage after her husband’s infidelity.

Despite these immense trials, Nicole entered remission, earned advanced degrees, remarried, and became a passionate advocate for head-and-neck cancer awareness. She spoke openly about how long-term treatment alters speech, nutrition, facial appearance, financial stability, and self-identity, offering vital support to fellow patients facing similar struggles.

Unfortunately, the cancer recurred multiple times, leading to further surgeries and extensive facial reconstruction using tissue from her leg. Nicole passed away on January 23, 2025, at age 33, after an eight-year battle. Her journey highlights the dangerous subtlety of rare head-and-neck cancers, serving as a powerful reminder that persistent oral pain should never be ignored.
