THE RED CHAIR IS STILL HIS… SO WHY IS TOM JONES LEAVING THE VOICE UK?
Sir Tom Jones says he never wanted to leave The Voice UK — but ITV has decided to overhaul the coaching panel, leaving fans questioning whether the show will ever feel the same without him.
For more than a decade, Sir Tom Jones has been one of the most recognisable faces sitting in the famous red chairs of The Voice UK.
Now, that chair is about to belong to someone else.
The 86-year-old Welsh music legend will no longer serve as a full-time coach when the programme returns for its 15th series in 2027, following a major shake-up announced by ITV.
But perhaps the most surprising part of the story is that Jones says he never wanted to leave.
In September, Jones revealed that ITV had made the decision to remove him from the coaching line-up and that he had only been informed relatively recently.
He said the reason given to him was a financial difficulty involving insurance, while ITV publicly described the changes as part of an effort to refresh the programme.
“I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE”
Jones made his feelings clear in a statement shared with fans.
He said he loved The Voice and appreciated its audience, making it clear that walking away had not been his choice.
According to Jones, ITV had offered him a much smaller role in the next series, involving an appearance without being involved from the beginning of the competition.
For the legendary singer, that was not the same as continuing as a coach.
ITV, meanwhile, said it had enjoyed working with Jones and described him as “irreplaceable” while thanking him for the years of entertainment and the memorable moments he gave the programme.
The broadcaster also said it remained in discussions with Jones and his team about whether he could have some involvement in the next series.
But the familiar full-time red chair will belong to somebody else.
A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT VOICE UK
ITV has confirmed a dramatically different line-up for Series 15.
Cheryl will make her return to the coaching panel, joined by rapper Aitch, while Kelly Rowland returns for another series alongside longtime coach will.i.am.
Behind the scenes, there will be another major change.
Emma Willis, one of the show’s most familiar presenters, is leaving after years fronting the competition. Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon will take over presenting duties.
Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones are also leaving the coaching panel.
The changes represent one of the biggest transformations in the show’s recent history.
And for longtime viewers, the biggest question is obvious:
What will The Voice UK feel like without Tom Jones?
THE TIMING HAS MADE FANS TALK
The controversy surrounding Jones’ departure has taken on a new dimension after the programme recorded a particularly low audience figure.
The October 3 episode reportedly attracted fewer than 1.5 million viewers, described by reports as the show’s lowest audience figure to date.
The figure immediately sparked discussion among viewers, particularly because it came amid the backlash surrounding the show’s upcoming overhaul.
However, the ratings figure alone does not prove that viewers switched off specifically because Tom Jones is leaving.
The episode was also affected by scheduling and wider changes to the programme, meaning there is no confirmed evidence that Jones’ departure directly caused the decline.
Still, fans have been vocal.
For many longtime viewers, Jones represents more than simply another celebrity coach.
His decades-long music career, distinctive personality and warmth toward contestants became part of the identity of the programme itself.
THE MAN BEHIND THE RED CHAIR
Jones joined The Voice UK when the competition launched in 2012.
Although he was absent from the fifth series, he returned and remained a major part of the programme for years.
Across his career, the Welsh singer has sold millions of records and become one of Britain’s most recognisable performers.
His relationship with the show has also survived previous controversy.
When he was dropped from the BBC version of the programme ahead of its fifth series in 2016, Jones publicly criticised the way the decision had been handled.
A decade later, history appears to have repeated itself in a very different form.
Once again, the singer has found himself being told that his time in the red chair is coming to an end.
And once again, he has made it clear that leaving was not what he wanted.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
ITV’s new Voice UK will look very different when Series 15 arrives in 2027.
Cheryl and Aitch will bring new energy to the coaching panel.
Kelly Rowland will return.
will.i.am will remain.
And Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon will take over as hosts.
But one familiar presence will be missing.
Tom Jones.
ITV has not completely ruled out some form of involvement for the veteran singer, and discussions have taken place over a possible reduced role.
For now, however, there is no indication that he will return as a full-time coach.
And that leaves fans with a question that may become increasingly difficult for the programme to answer:
Can you really have The Voice UK without Sir Tom Jones in the red chair?
For ITV, the answer appears to be yes.
For many viewers, the debate is only just beginning.
