“OUR HEARTS WILL ACHE FOREVER” — FAMILIES PAY EMOTIONAL TRIBUTES TO THREE TEENAGERS KILLED IN RIVER WEAR TRAGEDY

SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND — Three teenagers whose lives were cut short when a car plunged into the River Wear are being remembered by their families as a beloved daughter, a caring son and a young man whose kindness brought happiness to those around him.

Zara Shaw, 16, Luke Etheridge, 16, and Jackson Duke, 17, died after a black Audi A3 entered the river near Panns Bank and Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland shortly before 1:30 p.m. on September 29, 2026.

Their deaths have devastated their families, friends, classmates and the wider community. In the days following the tragedy, relatives shared deeply personal tributes that offered a glimpse into the lives of three young people who had so much still ahead of them.

At a time of unimaginable grief, their words reflected not only the pain of losing her but also the lasting memories they will carry with them.

Luke’s family remembered him as a loving, kind, caring and funny teenager who meant everything to them.

A passionate Sunderland AFC supporter, Luke was known for following the club closely and sharing the latest football news with his family. They affectionately described him as Sunderland’s “number one fan.”

Away from football, Luke enjoyed shopping for clothes, spending time with friends and family, and being with the family dog, Wilf.

His relatives recalled how they did everything together, from watching football and taking shopping trips to enjoying holidays and spending time at home.

Their tribute captured the depth of their loss in a simple but heartbreaking message: “Luke is our life, we miss him so bad. Our hearts will ache forever.”

For those who knew him, Luke will be remembered for his warmth, humour and the everyday moments that made him such an important part of his family’s life.

Jackson Duke, 17, Also Lost in the Tragedy

Jackson, who was 17, was also named among the three teenagers who died in the incident.

His family, friends and fellow students have been left grieving the loss of a young man whose future had only just begun. Jackson and Luke were from the Sunderland area, while Zara was from Houghton-le-Spring in Tyne and Wear.

All three teenagers attended Sunderland College’s Bede Campus. The college community expressed profound sadness following their deaths and paid tribute to the young people whose lives had touched fellow students and staff.

The tragedy has affected people across the area, with flowers and messages left near the riverside as friends and members of the public came together to remember the teenagers.

What Happened Near Wearmouth Bridge?

Northumbria Police said the black Audi A3 came off the road at Panns Bank and entered the River Wear shortly before 1:30 p.m. on September 29.

A fourth teenager, aged 17, managed to reach safety and sustained injuries described as non-serious.

The surviving teenager was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later released on bail while enquiries continued. Police have been investigating the circumstances that led to the vehicle entering the river, including establishing who was driving at the time.

At inquest hearings on October 12, the coroner heard that the preliminary causes of death for the three teenagers were consistent with drowning. The proceedings were adjourned while the investigation continued.

Authorities have urged people not to speculate about the incident, out of respect for the families and everyone affected.

Three Young Lives, Remembered With Love

For Zara, Luke and Jackson’s loved ones, the loss cannot be measured by headlines or court proceedings. It is felt in the empty places at home, the messages that will no longer arrive and the everyday moments that families once took for granted.

Their tributes have brought attention back to the individuals behind the tragedy: Zara with her laughter and love of life, Luke with his devotion to football and family, and Jackson, whose life was also cut short far too soon.

As the investigation continues, their families are left to face a future without three young people they cherished deeply.

The words shared by Zara and Luke’s relatives express a feeling that many grieving families understand: the pain of losing someone does not disappear, but neither does the love or the memory of the person they were.

Zara Shaw, Luke Etheridge and Jackson Duke were more than the names in a tragic news story. They were children, siblings, friends and loved ones — and they will be remembered by the people whose lives they touched.
