THREE TEENAGERS DIED AFTER CAR ENTERED RIVER WEAR — INQUEST HEARS THEY LIKELY DROWNED

Jackson Duke, 17, and friends Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, both 16, died after an Audi entered the River Wear in Sunderland. A fourth teenager escaped, as investigators continue examining what happened.

SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND — Three teenagers who died after a car entered the River Wear are believed to have drowned, an inquest has heard, as their families continue to mourn the loss of three young lives.

Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, both 16, were travelling in a black Audi A3 when it left the road near Panns Bank and entered the river close to Wearmouth Bridge on September 29, 2026.

Northumbria Police said they received reports shortly before 1:30 p.m. that the vehicle had entered the water. Four people were believed to be inside the car. One 17-year-old boy managed to get out and reach safety, while the other three occupants were later recovered from the vehicle by divers.

At inquest-opening hearings on October 12, the coroner was told that post-mortem examinations indicated the teenagers’ deaths were likely to be consistent with drowning.

Coroner’s officer Vicky Ross explained that one occupant had managed to escape the submerged vehicle, while the other three could not. The coroner adjourned the proceedings until January 21, 2027, while the police investigation continues.

The inquests have not determined the full circumstances of the incident. Investigators are still working to establish how the car entered the river and who was driving at the time.

THREE YOUNG LIVES REMEMBERED

Jackson and Luke were from the Sunderland area, while Zara was from the Houghton-le-Spring area of Tyne and Wear.

Zara’s family described her as a “beautiful girl” with a zest for life. Their tribute recalled her infectious laugh and smile, the friendships she built and the pride she brought to her family.

Luke’s relatives remembered him as loving, kind, caring, funny and handsome. A devoted Sunderland supporter, he enjoyed football, spending time with friends and family, and being with the family dog.

The three teenagers’ deaths have deeply affected their families, friends, classmates and the wider Sunderland community.

A COMMUNITY PAYS TRIBUTE

The tragedy was also remembered at Sunderland’s Premier League match against Brighton. Players wore black armbands, and supporters joined a minute’s applause in memory of Jackson, Luke and Zara.

The gesture offered a public moment of remembrance for three young people whose futures had stretched ahead of them.
