“REST SAFE, OUR BEAUTIFUL GIRL” — ZARA SHAW, 16, REMEMBERED IN HEARTBREAKING FAMILY TRIBUTE AFTER RIVER WEAR TRAGEDY
Zara Shaw was just 16, with her whole future ahead of her. Now, her family are remembering her infectious laugh, love of life and the special bond she shared with her sister, Olivia, after she died alongside two teenage boys when a car entered the River Wear in Sunderland.
SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND — The family of Zara Shaw have shared deeply personal words in tribute to their “beautiful girl”, describing a teenager whose warmth, bright personality and unmistakable smile left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
Zara, 16, was one of three teenagers who died after a black Audi A3 entered the River Wear near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland on September 29, 2026. The other victims were Luke Etheridge, 16, and Jackson Duke, 17.
In a statement released through Northumbria Police, Zara’s family described her as a young person who had brought joy and pride to their lives from the moment she was born.
“YOU HAD A ZEST FOR LIFE”
The family’s tribute painted a picture of a teenager who loved making memories, learning new skills and spending time with the people closest to her.
“Zara, you came into this world with a fight, and we know you left it doing the same,” they wrote.
They described her as someone with a “zest for life”, adding that she had made them proud from day one.
Her dance videos, infectious laugh and smile were among the memories they highlighted, alongside the friendships she had formed and the skills she had worked hard to develop.
Their words reflected the many roles Zara held in the lives of those around her: beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, girlfriend and best friend.
For her parents, the loss is not only that of a daughter, but of a young woman whose future was still unfolding.
A SPECIAL BOND WITH HER SISTER
One of the most personal details in the family’s message was Zara’s relationship with her sister, Olivia.
They described Zara as having been “created as a companion” for Olivia, who loved her “deeply and unconditionally”.
The words offered a glimpse into a family bond that cannot be captured by the brief details of a news report. For Olivia and the rest of the family, the memories they shared with Zara will remain part of their lives long after the public attention surrounding the tragedy fades.
The family also thanked the people who had been part of Zara’s life, saying their kindness and support had helped shape the person she became.
“At the worst time of our lives,” they wrote, they were grateful for the good wishes and compassion shown to them.
REMEMBERED AS A KIND AND LOYAL STUDENT
Zara had attended Christ’s College in Sunderland, where she studied from the age of four until leaving in the summer.
The school remembered her as a kind and loyal student who maintained positive relationships with classmates and teachers. Staff described her as a delight to teach, noting that she worked hard and had a close circle of friends.
She had also been a student at The Drama Lab in Sunderland, which expressed sadness following her death and sent condolences to her family and loved ones.
The tributes from her school and the wider community have helped reveal the different parts of Zara’s life — as a student, a friend, a family member and a teenager building plans for the years ahead.
WHAT HAPPENED NEAR WEARMOUTH BRIDGE?
Northumbria Police said they received reports shortly before 1:30 p.m. on September 29 that a black Audi A3 had left the road at Panns Bank near Wearmouth Bridge and entered the River Wear.
Emergency services attended, and a major search operation followed. Zara, Luke and Jackson were later recovered from the water.
A fourth occupant, a 17-year-old boy, managed to reach safety and sustained injuries described by police as non-serious.
The teenager was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later released on bail pending further enquiries. Police said investigators were still working to establish who was driving when the car entered the river.
The circumstances leading to the incident remain under investigation. Northumbria Police have urged the public not to speculate or circulate claims that could cause further distress to the families. <Cite refs={[“turn790448search2″,”turn790448search3”]}/>
THE FAMILY’S FINAL WORDS
Alongside their tribute to Zara, her family thanked the police liaison officers and emergency-service personnel who attended the scene.
They said they were grateful that their daughter had been treated with care and dignity, rather than simply as a name connected to an incident.
Their message ended with words that captured both their love and their grief:
“Rest safe our beautiful girl, Zara.”
For those who knew her, Zara will remain the teenager remembered for her smile, laughter, friendships and the joy she brought to her family. The investigation may continue to seek answers about the events of September 29, but the family’s tribute makes one thing clear: Zara’s life meant far more than the circumstances in which it ended.
She was 16, deeply loved, and a daughter and sister whose absence will be felt for years to come.
