“THERE’S NEVER A GOOD TIME TO FIRE AN 86-YEAR-OLD” — TOM JONES’ EXIT FROM THE VOICE UK SPARKS FRESH BACKLASH

“THERE’S NEVER A GOOD TIME TO FIRE AN 86-YEAR-OLD” — TOM JONES’ EXIT FROM THE VOICE UK SPARKS FRESH BACKLASH
Fans are demanding answers after Sir Tom Jones was dropped as a full-time coach, while the show’s latest format changes have triggered another wave of criticism.
Sir Tom Jones may be preparing to leave The Voice UK, but the debate surrounding his departure is far from over.
The 86-year-old music legend confirmed in September that he did not want to leave the ITV singing competition, saying the network had made the decision and that he had only recently been informed. He also revealed that he had been offered a much-reduced role, an arrangement he was unhappy with.
“I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE”
Tom has been associated with The Voice UK since its launch in 2012, becoming one of its most recognisable coaches.
Explaining his departure, the Welsh singer said the reason given to him involved financial difficulties with insurance. ITV, meanwhile, described him as “irreplaceable” and thanked him for his years on the programme, highlighting the memorable moments he had shared with contestants and viewers.
The network confirmed that Tom would not be a full-time coach in the upcoming fifteenth series, scheduled to air in 2027. ITV said discussions about his possible involvement were continuing, but no full-time return has been confirmed.
WILL.I.AM AND FANS KEEP THE CAMPAIGN ALIVE
The decision prompted a petition calling for Tom to be reinstated. Fellow coach will.i.am also backed the campaign, giving supporters another reason to believe their voices might reach the programme’s decision-makers.
By late September, reports said the petition had attracted more than 63,000 signatures. The number reflects the strength of the campaign, although it does not guarantee that ITV will change its plans.
ANOTHER CONTROVERSY HITS THE SHOW
Tom’s departure is not the only change generating discussion.
Recent episodes have drawn criticism from some viewers over changes to the traditional Battle Rounds, including the absence of a live studio audience during performances. Some fans have argued online that the revised format has lost part of the atmosphere that made the competition distinctive.
The next series will also feature a revamped line-up. Cheryl and rapper Aitch are set to join returning coaches will.i.am and Kelly Rowland, while Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon will take over presenting duties.
Whether the changes will attract new viewers or leave longtime fans longing for the show’s earlier format remains to be seen.
WILL ITV RECONSIDER?
For now, there is no confirmed announcement that Tom will return as a full-time coach. ITV has thanked him for his contribution, while the petition continues to give supporters a public way to express their disappointment.
After more than a decade on the programme, Tom’s departure has become about more than a single chair: it has sparked a wider conversation about how the show balances fresh ideas with the personalities and traditions that viewers have come to love.
