MAHOGANY GETER: EMBRACING CONFIDENCE THROUGH MODELING

For most of her life, Mahogany Geter went to great lengths to conceal her left leg. Born with lymphedema, a medical condition causing severe fluid retention and swelling, her left leg grew to weigh approximately 100 pounds (45 kilograms). Growing up, the harsh stares and cruel remarks from strangers deeply damaged her self-esteem, prompting her to wear long trousers and flowing skirts to keep her condition hidden from the world.

Everything changed in 2017 while Mahogany was working a shift at Walmart. A professional photographer approached her and proposed a photoshoot. Initially skeptical, she wondered why anyone would want to take pictures of her. However, with strong encouragement from her supportive family, she decided to take a leap of faith and accept the offer.

That single photoshoot marked a pivotal turning point in her life. The sessions became a safe space where Mahogany gradually built a renewed sense of confidence. She created a modeling portfolio and actively chose to showcase her unedited leg online, challenging traditional beauty standards. Modeling provided her with a platform to speak openly about living with lymphedema, from the struggle of finding matching footwear to managing continuous medical care.

Over time, Mahogany built a growing online audience, using her platform to raise awareness and answer public questions about her condition. She even expressed her dream of working alongside famous model Winnie Harlow. What began as a moment of profound self-doubt eventually evolved into a powerful career and a path toward self-acceptance.
