MAJOR UPDATE: POLICE DIVERS RECOVER ITEMS FROM MISSING FISHING BOAT AS TWO CREWMEN REMAIN LOST AT SEA

A breakthrough in the search for the missing FV Kilda has raised fresh hopes of understanding what happened off the coast of Scotland. Police divers have recovered items confirmed to belong to the vessel, but two fishermen remain unaccounted for after a tragedy that has devastated their families and a close-knit island community.

Police divers have recovered items linked to a missing Scottish fishing boat as the search for two crew members continues off the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.

The FV Kilda disappeared on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, after its crew failed to return to port. The vessel was carrying three fishermen: skipper Douglas Craigie, 49, Norman “Tam” Murray, 40, and Murdo Morrison, 23.

The alarm was raised at around 9:20 p.m. after the boat failed to arrive as expected. A major search operation was launched, involving coastguard teams, lifeboats, helicopters and specialist officers.

On October 22, specialist officers from Police Scotland’s Marine and Dive Unit, working alongside partner agencies, searched an area of interest off Port of Ness.

During the operation, they recovered items confirmed to belong to the missing fishing vessel.

Although the discovery could help investigators piece together the events surrounding the disappearance, the boat itself had not been located in the reports available at that time. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the precise cause of the incident.

Inspector Neil Taylor said officers were continuing to work with partner agencies to establish what happened, describing the operation as complex.

ONE LIFE LOST — TWO FAMILIES STILL WAITING

The body of Douglas Craigie was recovered from the sea in the early hours of October 14, bringing devastating news to his loved ones.

His crewmates, Norman “Tam” Murray and Murdo Morrison, remain missing. Both men are being treated as missing persons as efforts continue to trace them and the vessel.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Western Isles fishing community, where the sea is both a livelihood and a way of life.

For the families of the missing men, the uncertainty is agonising. Each new development offers the possibility of answers, but the search has yet to bring the outcome they desperately hope for.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has been involved in the response and established a maritime exclusion zone during the underwater search.

A fishing industry representative subsequently suggested that the vessel may have sunk so quickly that the crew had no time to issue a distress signal. There were also questions about why emergency equipment designed to transmit a signal if a vessel sank had apparently failed to alert rescuers.

These are reported concerns, not a confirmed explanation. Investigators have said it is too early to speculate about the cause, and the circumstances surrounding the loss of the FV Kilda remain under examination.

 A COMMUNITY UNITED IN GRIEF

As the search continues, police have urged members of the public not to put themselves in danger by conducting their own searches at sea. Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 3575 of October 13.

The families have also asked for privacy as they endure an extraordinarily painful period.

For the loved ones of Douglas Craigie, Norman Murray and Murdo Morrison, the hope of answers remains intertwined with grief and uncertainty.

Until the missing vessel and crew are accounted for, the questions surrounding that night at sea remain painfully unresolved.

May Douglas Craigie rest in peace, and may Norman Murray and Murdo Morrison be found. Our thoughts are with all three families and the island community waiting for answers.
