SAD NEWS: MASTERCHEF STAR DIES AT JUST 44 AFTER HEARTBREAKING DIAGNOSIS
Mariusz Komenda, the MasterChef Poland semi-finalist remembered for his passion for food and infectious smile, has died following a battle with an aggressive brain tumour. He was just 44.
Fans of MasterChef Poland are mourning the loss of Mariusz Komenda, a talented chef and restaurateur whose life changed dramatically after a devastating diagnosis earlier this year.
Komenda died on October 7, 2026, months after doctors discovered a malignant brain tumour. His death was confirmed by TVN, the Polish broadcaster behind the cooking competition, which paid tribute to him as a member of the MasterChef family.
A diagnosis that changed his life
Komenda was admitted to hospital in January after doctors initially suspected he had suffered a stroke. Further examinations revealed a tumour in the right thalamus, a region deep inside the brain.
He subsequently underwent major surgery, further treatment and rehabilitation. In March, he shared details of his medical battle and described it as the hardest fight of his life.
A fundraising appeal was launched to help cover treatment-related expenses, including medication, medical examinations, rehabilitation and travel for care. Friends, neighbours and members of his local community rallied around him during the difficult months.
Despite the efforts to treat his illness, Komenda died on October 7.
The chef who captured viewersâ hearts
Komenda rose to wider recognition in 2019, when he competed in the eighth season of MasterChef Poland and reached the semi-finals.
His time on the show helped introduce his culinary talent to audiences across Poland. He later returned to the programme, sharing his experience with other contestants.
Away from television, he continued building his career in the restaurant industry. He opened Sztuka Restaurant in his hometown of Ćroda ĆlÄ ska and later worked alongside his son on the Father & Son restaurant project.
For Komenda, food was more than a career. It was a passion he continued to pursue even as he faced serious health challenges.
Emotional tributes from friends and colleagues
Following the announcement of his death, former contestants and members of the MasterChef community shared heartfelt tributes.
Grzegorz Zawierucha, who won the 2019 season, remembered his friend in an emotional farewell, saying he struggled to find the words to express his grief.
Fellow contestant Mateusz Krojenka also paid tribute, remembering Komendaâs infectious smile.
The MasterChef Poland team said it was difficult to find words to express its sadness and remembered him for his passion, energy and love of cooking.
Their messages reflected the impact he had on people both inside and outside the culinary world.
A life remembered beyond the competition
Mariusz Komendaâs story was not defined solely by his television appearances or his illness. He was also a chef, a restaurateur, a father and a man who continued pursuing his passion for food.
His death at just 44 has left family, friends and fans grieving a life cut short. For those who watched him compete, cooked alongside him or knew him personally, his legacy will live on through the memories he created and the people he inspired.
Rest in peace, Mariusz Komenda. You will be remembered for your talent, your determination and your love of cooking.
