A solo hike turned into a tragedy for Mauricio Marques Gomes, a 32-year-old mechanic from Macaé, Brazil, whose final videos have left viewers shaken.
Mauricio visited Cachoeira da Fortuna, known in English as Fortune Waterfall, on Monday, October 12, during a public holiday. While standing near the top of the waterfall, he recorded footage showing the steep drop below.
In one video, he reportedly remarked that falling from that height would mean death — words that have taken on a devastating meaning after the accident.
A SOLO TRIP THAT ENDED IN TRAGEDY
Mauricio was visiting the waterfall in the Córrego do Ouro area of Macaé. According to reports from Brazilian media, it was his first visit to the site.
A friend who had seen his social media posts said Mauricio had mentioned leaving his phone recording while he crossed a rock covered in slippery algae.
But Mauricio did not return home.
Concerned friends began looking for him that evening, and the search continued into the early hours of Tuesday. His body was eventually discovered submerged in the pool at the base of the waterfall.
Firefighters were called to assist with the recovery. His phone and cap were reportedly found near the top of the falls.
WHAT INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE HAPPENED
Initial reports indicate that Mauricio may have slipped on the rocks and struck his head during the fall. Forensic information cited by local media attributed his death to traumatic injuries caused by the fall.
The estimated height was approximately 80 metres, or around 262 feet.
Although the circumstances reported so far point to an accidental fall, details about the precise sequence of events should be treated carefully. The videos show Mauricio near a dangerous drop, but they do not establish exactly how the fall happened.

The footage has drawn attention because Mauricio appeared to acknowledge the danger as he filmed the waterfall.
