“TWO TOP BARRISTERS APPOINTED IN MARK CAIN CASE” — PROSECUTION TEAM PREPARES FOR NEXT STAGE AFTER DEATH OF DR HANNAH TERRY
Christopher Paxton KC and Steven Ball have been instructed to prosecute Mark Cain, who is charged with the murder of his wife, Dr Hannah Cain, known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry. The case remains before the courts, with a plea hearing scheduled for December.
The case surrounding the death of Norfolk GP Dr Hannah Cain has entered another stage after two experienced barristers were appointed to represent the prosecution.
Christopher Paxton KC and Steven Ball have been instructed by the Crown Prosecution Service’s East of England team in the case against Mark Cain, 45, who has been charged with the murder of his wife.
The appointment was announced by Red Lion Chambers on October 14, 2026. It marks a further development in the legal proceedings following the doctor’s death at the couple’s home in Dersingham, Norfolk.
Who are the barristers handling the prosecution?
Christopher Paxton KC is an experienced criminal barrister who has handled serious and complex cases, including murder and manslaughter prosecutions.
Steven Ball is also an experienced criminal practitioner who works on serious criminal proceedings. He appeared for the prosecution at Mark Cain’s first Crown Court hearing at King’s Lynn.
Their appointment comes as the case moves towards its next scheduled hearing. However, the appointment of a prosecution team does not establish guilt; the allegations must be considered through the court process.
What happened to Dr Hannah Cain?
Dr Hannah Cain, 45, was found unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom at her home in Fern Hill, Dersingham, in the early hours of October 4.
At an initial court hearing, the prosecution said emergency services attended after the ambulance service contacted police at approximately 2:25 a.m.
The court also heard that an initial post-mortem examination recorded blunt-force injuries to the head and neck injuries described as consistent with compression. These details were presented during early proceedings; the full evidence and circumstances surrounding her death remain matters for the legal process.
A doctor remembered by her family
Known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, she worked at Grimston Medical Centre and also ran a cosmetics business.
Reports said she was among a pool of doctors who could be called upon to provide medical care to members of the Royal Family when they were staying near the Sandringham Estate.
Her family described her as “kind, generous and loving” and praised the care she gave her patients. They also asked for privacy as they grieve their loss. <Cite refs={[“turn973679news6″,”turn973679search4”]}/>
What happens next?
Mark Cain appeared at King’s Lynn Crown Court on October 8 and was remanded in custody. A plea hearing was scheduled for December 3, 2026, provisionally at Norwich Crown Court. No provisional trial date had been set in the reporting available at the time.
For Dr Hannah’s family, the proceedings unfold alongside the personal grief of losing a loved one. Their tribute remains a reminder that behind the legal headlines was a doctor, mother and friend whose life mattered deeply to those who knew her.
The next hearing is expected to bring the case into its next stage, but only the court process can determine the outcome.
