RACING WORLD RALLIES AROUND JOCKEY AFTER TRAGIC FALL CLAIMS BELOVED HORSE OHOPE WINS

A dramatic moment during Australia’s prestigious Caulfield Cup has left the racing community grieving, as tributes pour in for a talented mare whose life ended after a devastating fall.

The racing world has been left heartbroken after Ohope Wins, a celebrated New Zealand mare, was euthanised following a serious fall during the Caulfield Cup in Melbourne on Saturday, October 17.

The incident unfolded in the closing stages of the 2,400-metre race, when defending champion Half Yours fell in the home straight. Ohope Wins, ridden by jockey Jye McNeil, was unable to avoid the fallen horse and also went down.

Veterinarians rushed to Ohope Wins, but the severity of her injuries meant she could not be saved. Racing Victoria later confirmed that she was humanely euthanised at the track.

A talented mare remembered for more than her victories

Ohope Wins had built an impressive record, including victories in both the New Zealand Oaks and the Australian Turf Club Oaks. She was trained by Chris Waller at the time of the incident and owned by Yulong.

Those who knew her remembered not only her ability on the track but also her temperament and personality.

In a tribute shared after her passing, Yulong and Waller described her as brave, kind, full of character and deeply loved by the people who cared for her every day.

Her death has prompted an outpouring of sadness throughout the racing community, with many reflecting on the close bonds between racehorses and the people who look after them.

Both jockeys taken to hospital

The fall also involved Mark Zahra, who was riding Half Yours. Both Zahra and McNeil were reported conscious and alert after the incident and were taken to hospital for further assessment.

Half Yours regained his feet and returned to the stables with injuries described by co-trainer Tony McEvoy as superficial lacerations. The horse was also assessed by veterinarians.

The incident cast a shadow over a race that had otherwise delivered a major victory for Kingswood, ridden by John Allen and trained by Gavin Bedggood.

Racing Victoria stewards confirmed that an inquiry would be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the fall. A separate veterinary review was also planned.

The tragedy has renewed debate about horse welfare and safety in racing. Animal-welfare advocates have called for greater accountability, while racing figures have pointed to safety measures already introduced across the industry.

The precise circumstances of the fall remain subject to review, and no final findings should be assumed before the inquiry is completed.

For those who cared for Ohope Wins, however, the loss is already deeply personal. Behind the race results and headlines was a horse remembered for her talent, her character and the people who loved her.

Rest in peace, Ohope Wins. Your presence on the track will not be forgotten.
