PREMATURE BABY BETTS FACED A FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL WITH RARE 𝖮𝖬𝖯𝖧𝖠𝖫𝖮𝖢𝖤𝖫𝖤, SPENDING 10 DAYS ON ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT AS DOCTORS FOUGHT TO SAVE HER

For little Betts, the beginning of life was far from easy. Born prematurely with a rare condition that left some of her organs developing outside her abdomen, she faced an uncertain start that no family could ever be prepared for.
Betts was diagnosed with omphalocele, a birth defect in which abdominal organs develop outside the body through an opening in the abdominal wall. Her early days were filled with intensive medical care as doctors worked tirelessly to give her the best possible chance of recovery.
Her condition became so serious that she required ECMO, an advanced form of life support that helps keep blood circulating and oxygen flowing when the heart or lungs cannot function adequately on their own. For 10 long days, Betts remained on this life-support system, surrounded by a dedicated medical team and the love of her family.

For her parents, every day brought a mixture of fear, hope and prayers for their precious daughter.
“There were moments when we could only take things one day at a time,” her family might say. “All we wanted was to see Betts grow stronger and have the chance to come home.”
Thanks to the expertise and dedication of the NICU team, Betts has made remarkable progress and is now recovering well.
Although her journey is not quite over, there is a hopeful milestone ahead. Around her first birthday, she is expected to return to Children’s for surgery to close her omphalocele, with Dr. Matthew Clifton, Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery, leading the procedure.
And waiting for her beyond the hospital walls is someone very special: her big sister, Margaret.

Already Betts’ biggest cheerleader, Margaret is eager to welcome her little sister home and begin making memories together. Their bond is a beautiful reminder that even during the most difficult beginnings, love can offer a powerful reason to keep going.
Betts has already overcome so much in her short life. Now, with her recovery progressing and another important step ahead, her family has something wonderful to look forward to — the chance to watch their two little girls grow up side by side.
Sometimes, the sweetest victories are not measured by how far a child has travelled, but by the precious moments waiting just beyond the hospital doors. And for Betts, one of those moments will be coming home to Margaret’s loving embrace.
