TWO LIVES LOST AT A CHILDREN’S SOCCER GAME — FAMILIES LEFT HEARTBROKEN AFTER KANSAS TRAGEDY
A six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man were killed after a pickup truck drove onto a youth soccer field in Wichita, Kansas. Ten other people were injured, and investigators are still working to establish exactly what happened.
What should have been an ordinary Saturday afternoon filled with children playing soccer and families cheering from the sidelines turned into an unimaginable tragedy.
On October 17, 2026, a Chevrolet pickup truck entered a field at the Stryker Sports Complex in northeast Wichita, striking multiple people during a youth soccer event. Authorities later confirmed that two people had lost their lives: six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. The two victims were from McPherson, Kansas, and were not related.
TWO FAMILIES FACING AN UNIMAGINABLE LOSS
Cole was only six years old, an age when weekends should be filled with play, family outings and the excitement of growing up.
Nicholas Schafer, 35, was also among those who died. Photographs of Nicholas were later published as news of the tragedy spread, prompting an outpouring of concern for those who knew him.
Behind the headlines are families now facing a loss that cannot be undone. The incident also left other families anxiously dealing with injuries and the emotional impact of witnessing what happened.
Authorities said ten people, ranging in age from five to 68, were taken to hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Several of those hurt were children.
WITNESSES DESCRIBE PANIC ON THE FIELD
Emergency calls came in at approximately 3:25 p.m. as people at the complex tried to understand what was happening and help those who had been injured.
Witnesses described a scene of confusion and panic as the pickup continued across the playing area. Parents and bystanders rushed to assist victims while emergency responders made their way to the scene.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan praised members of the public who attempted to provide urgent assistance before medical teams arrived, describing their response as a reflection of the community.
The event had been intended to bring young players and their families together through sport. Instead, it became a day that those present are unlikely to forget.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE DRIVER?
Police said the driver was a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas. She was initially detained and questioned before being released on Sunday, October 18, without charges being filed at that stage.
Investigators are awaiting toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the vehicle. Police have interviewed more than 30 witnesses and are seeking additional video evidence to help establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the truck entered the field accidentally or deliberately. The driver’s identity has not been publicly released, and no conclusion about responsibility should be drawn while the investigation remains ongoing.
A COMMUNITY UNITED IN GRIEF
The Stryker Sports Complex announced that events had been cancelled until further notice. Wichita Mayor Lily Wu expressed sorrow for the victims and their families, particularly the children affected by the incident.
For the families who lost loved ones, the days ahead will be filled with grief and difficult questions. For those who witnessed the scene, the memories of that afternoon may take time to process.
A soccer field is meant to be a place of teamwork, friendship and childhood memories. On this day, it became the setting for a tragedy that reached far beyond the boundaries of the pitch.
As investigators continue their work, two families are left mourning Cole and Nicholas, while an entire community searches for answers.
May Cole Adrian and Nicholas Schafer rest in peace. Our thoughts are with their loved ones and everyone affected by this heartbreaking event.
