FAT@L TIGER INCIDENT INQUEST: WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S FAMILY RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT HIS FINAL MONTHS

FATAL TIGER INCIDENT INQUEST: WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S FAMILY RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT HIS FINAL MONTHS
The family of 24-year-old William Chapman has questioned the support he received from mental health services before his death at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. An inquest has heard new details about his medical history, while a full hearing is scheduled for next year.
The death of William Chapman at Yorkshire Wildlife Park has left his family grieving and searching for answers about the circumstances leading up to the tragedy.
William died on October 10, 2026, after entering the enclosure of an Amur tiger named Altai at the wildlife park in Doncaster, England. At the opening of the inquest on October 15, the hearing was told that William had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced episodes of psychosis.
His family also expressed concerns about his contact with mental health services before his death. Those concerns are now part of the wider questions surrounding the circumstances of the incident.
HIS FAMILY’S CONCERNS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
According to evidence presented at Doncaster Coroner’s Court, William had been under the care of adult mental health services in Doncaster.
The inquest heard that, despite his history of mental illness, he had been described as highly functioning and independent, with no formal care requirements.
His family had raised a number of concerns about his contact with mental health services. The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has since launched an investigation into the care he received.
The family has also spoken about the distress caused by online material relating to the incident and has asked for the coroner’s process to be respected.
Their concerns do not, by themselves, establish that any failure in care contributed to William’s death. That is one of the issues that may be examined as further information becomes available.
WHAT HAPPENED AT YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK?
The inquest heard that William visited the park on October 10 and entered the tiger enclosure at approximately 1:30 p.m. after climbing over two fences.
The coroner’s officer told the hearing that William was approached by the tiger and sustained multiple traumatic injuries during the ensuing physical encounter. An initial post-mortem examination recorded multiple traumatic injuries as the cause of death.
Park staff secured the animal, and paramedics attended the scene. William was pronounced dead at the park.
The incident prompted an investigation by South Yorkshire Police, while the City of Doncaster Council began a health-and-safety investigation in its role as the park’s licensing authority.
THE TIGER’S FUTURE HAS BEEN CONFIRMED
The incident also raised questions about what would happen to Altai, the tiger involved.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed that Altai was safe and well and would not be euthanised. The park has said that animal welfare remains a priority while the relevant authorities continue their enquiries.
The confirmation has addressed one of the questions raised by the public, although it does not resolve the wider issues surrounding William’s death.
WHEN WILL THE FULL INQUEST TAKE PLACE?
The opening hearing was a preliminary step rather than a full examination of all the evidence. The coroner’s office is awaiting further information before the next stage of proceedings.
A full inquest is scheduled for March 18, 2027. It is expected to examine the circumstances of William’s death in greater detail.
Until that hearing takes place, questions about his final days, his contact with mental health services and the events at the wildlife park remain matters for the appropriate investigations.
REMEMBERING WILLIAM
In a tribute, William’s family described him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man.” Their loss extends far beyond the circumstances in which he died.
As the investigations continue, the family is left to mourn someone they loved while waiting for a fuller account of what happened.
The inquest may help establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and address questions raised by the family. For now, their concerns deserve to be heard carefully, without jumping to conclusions before the evidence has been examined.
