GRANDMOTHER YVONNE WHEAR’S REMAINS FOUND AFTER EIGHT MONTHS — POLICE MAKE URGENT NEW APPEAL

The disappearance of 73-year-old Yvonne Whear ended in heartbreak when her remains were discovered in a remote livestock dip in rural Australia. Now, investigators are asking a crucial question: who knows what happened during the eight months she was missing?

The search for Yvonne Whear, a grandmother from northern New South Wales, has ended in tragedy after police confirmed that human remains found in an isolated rural location belonged to the missing 73-year-old.

Yvonne was last seen on February 19, 2026, near Murwillumbah. For months, her family waited desperately for news, hoping that the mystery surrounding her disappearance would finally be resolved.

On October 5, two trail-bike riders discovered a body in a disused livestock dip on a property off Kyogle Road at Terragon, approximately 20 kilometres south of Murwillumbah.

Police later confirmed the remains were Yvonne’s. Her death is now being investigated as a homicide.

The investigation took a significant turn in September, when Yvonne’s gold Ford Escape SUV was recovered from the Rous River near Dulguigan.

The vehicle was located on September 12, more than seven months after she disappeared. It was found less than 10 kilometres from her home, but Yvonne was not inside.

The discovery deepened the concerns of her family, who had been desperate to understand what had happened to her.

Police examined the vehicle and continued pursuing leads. Less than a month later, the discovery at Terragon brought confirmation of Yvonne’s fate, but it also raised new questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.

Investigators described the place where Yvonne was found as isolated, down an overgrown fire trail.

The livestock dip was a tank once used to treat cattle for ticks and other parasites. Her remains were found partially submerged inside it.

Police established a task force to investigate the death and appealed to people who may have visited the area between February 19 and October 5.

Their appeal includes anyone who travelled along the nearby track, visited the livestock dip or went to a swimming hole on Kyogle Road during those months.

Even a seemingly minor observation could help investigators reconstruct what happened, police said.

EIGHT MONTHS OF QUESTIONS FOR A GRIEVING FAMILY

Yvonne was a mother of three, a grandmother of 10 and a great-grandmother. Her disappearance left her loved ones facing months of uncertainty before the devastating confirmation arrived.

Police have acknowledged that, although her identity is now known, significant questions remain about how she came to be at the location where she was found.

No suspect had been publicly identified in the official reports reviewed for this article, and investigators have not established publicly who was responsible.

Authorities have also said there was no evidence at that stage connecting the case to other unsolved killings or missing-person investigations.

POLICE URGE ANYONE WITH INFORMATION TO COME FORWARD

Investigators are continuing to examine evidence and follow up information received since Yvonne was reported missing.

They are particularly interested in anyone who may have seen unusual activity around the remote property or nearby swimming hole during the months in question.

The appeal is not limited to people who witnessed something significant. A passing observation, a vehicle seen in the area or a conversation that seemed unimportant at the time could potentially help detectives.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Tweed Heads Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can also be submitted through NSW Crime Stoppers.

For Yvonne’s family, the discovery has answered one painful question while leaving others unresolved. They now face the loss of a loved one while investigators work to establish the circumstances of her death.

🕊️ Yvonne deserves to be remembered as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose life mattered—not only as the subject of an unsolved investigation.
