ECUADORIAN PRIEST SPOKE ABOUT DEATH BEFORE FALLING CRUCIFIX KILLED HIM DURING MASS
GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR — A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken Ecuador’s Catholic community after Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari, a 52-year-old Redemptorist priest, was killed when a heavy crucifix reportedly fell on him while he was celebrating Mass.
The accident occurred on Saturday, October 17, at Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil. According to reports, the Mass was being livestreamed when the heavy wooden religious structure fell from the altar and struck the priest.
But amid the grief surrounding his sudden death, one detail has drawn particular attention: Father Patricio had reportedly spoken about mortality shortly before the fatal incident.
“One day, all of us who are here are going to die too,” he reportedly reflected during the Mass.
Those words have since taken on a deeply poignant meaning, leaving many who have heard about the tragedy reflecting on the unexpected fragility of life.
A TRAGEDY JUST ONE DAY AFTER HIS ORDINATION ANNIVERSARY
Father Patricio’s death came just one day after he celebrated the 15th anniversary of his priestly ordination, making the loss especially devastating for those who knew him and followed his ministry.
As a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, he dedicated his life to serving the Church and supporting communities through his pastoral work.
Throughout his ministry, he served in several Ecuadorian locations, including Loja, Durán, Manta and Vinces.
His unexpected passing has prompted an outpouring of sorrow among members of the Catholic community, with prayers being offered for his eternal rest.
HIS FINAL JOURNEY TO CUENCA
On Monday, October 19, Father Patricio’s remains arrived in his hometown of Cuenca after being transported from Guayaquil.
His wake was held at Camposanto Santa Ana, where relatives, fellow clergy, friends and mourners gathered to remember his life and pay their final respects.
A memorial Mass was scheduled for 7 p.m. that evening, while his funeral was scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, at 3 p.m.
His burial in Cuenca was in keeping with his final wish to be laid to rest in the Azuay provincial capital.
WORDS THAT WILL NOT SOON BE FORGOTTEN
The circumstances of Father Patricio’s death have made his reported reflection on mortality especially moving for those mourning him.
A moment of prayer and spiritual reflection became the setting for an unimaginable tragedy, cutting short the life of a priest who had devoted 15 years to his vocation.
As the investigation and any efforts to establish the precise circumstances of the accident continue, his community is left to grieve a loss that came without warning.
For many believers, his final reported words serve as a reminder of the uncertainty of life and the importance of faith, compassion and the time spent with those we love.
The words of Psalm 34:18 offer comfort to those mourning his death:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
May Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari rest in eternal peace, and may his family, fellow priests and grieving community find strength and comfort in the days ahead. 🕊️
