UNRESOLVED MYSTERY: THE DISAPPEARANCE OF CALEB RAY DIEHL
When 18-year-old Caleb Ray Diehl disappeared from Nocona, Texas, in March 2015, the truck he had borrowed from family friend Ricky Dale Howard turned up two days later inside Howard’s locked shop. Caleb was nowhere to be found, but $300 in cash was zip-tied to the steering wheel, and his final phone signal traced directly to Howard’s property. Howard claimed he found Caleb’s broken phone and threw it away, while investigators found burned computers and destroyed SIM cards on Howard’s property.

Caleb had worked for Howard since middle school, and their families were close. However, dark secrets soon emerged. Howard had faced past allegations of misconduct involving young men dating back to 2001. In 2017, Caleb’s mother discovered hidden evidence in a bathroom cabinet, including a hidden camera clock and audio recordings of Howard practicing polygraph questions. This suggested Caleb was secretly gathering evidence about Howard’s conduct before vanishing.

Forensic specialists later recovered exploited media from Howard’s computers, leading to his 2021 federal conviction and a 30-year prison sentence. Despite this conviction, Howard was never charged in Caleb’s disappearance, and no physical trace of the young man has ever been found. More than a decade later, Caleb’s family still searches for answers regarding what happened that March evening, why the truck was returned with cash, and where Caleb is today.
