“SHE WAS OUR ROCK”: MOTHER, 47, DIES AFTER BEING STABBED AND CRASHING HER CAR JUST 300 YARDS FROM HOSPITAL
Eleanor Barnfield was desperately trying to reach medical help after suffering serious injuries in an alleged knife attack at work. Her family has now paid a heartbreaking tribute to the “kindest, most loving, bravest person in the world.”
A devoted mother and much-loved care worker has died after allegedly being stabbed at a sheltered housing complex in Bridgend, South Wales, in a tragedy that has left her family and colleagues devastated.
Eleanor Barnfield, 47, was injured at the Ger-y-Nant sheltered housing complex on Monday, October 19, 2026.
In a desperate attempt to reach medical help, she reportedly drove herself towards the Princess of Wales Hospital. But she collapsed at the wheel and crashed her car into a wall just a short distance from the hospital.
When police and emergency responders arrived, they discovered that her injuries were not caused by the collision. Officers identified puncture wounds unrelated to the crash, and Eleanor was taken to hospital.
Despite medical efforts, she tragically died.
Her family has since shared an emotional tribute to a woman they described as their rock, saying she meant everything to them and would be forever loved and deeply missed.
“SHE WAS THE KINDEST, MOST LOVING, BRAVEST PERSON”
In a statement released through South Wales Police, Eleanor’s family expressed the enormous pain of losing someone so central to their lives.
“Mum was the kindest, most loving bravest person in the world,” they said.
“She meant everything to us and will be forever loved and missed deeply by her devoted family and friends. She was our rock.”
The words reveal the depth of the loss facing her loved ones.
Eleanor was more than a colleague or employee. She was a mother, a friend and a source of strength for the people who knew her best.
Friends also remembered her as a caring person who was deeply dedicated to her work.
For her family, the suddenness of her death makes the tragedy even harder to comprehend. A woman who left for work would never return home.
A DESPERATE JOURNEY TO HOSPITAL
According to reports, Eleanor contacted emergency services at approximately 11:25 a.m. on Monday after being attacked at the sheltered housing complex.
The call reportedly disconnected, and the control room attempted to call her back but could not reach her.
Eleanor then attempted to drive herself to the Princess of Wales Hospital, around a mile and a half away.
She managed to travel part of the journey before losing control of the car and crashing into a wall approximately 300 yards from the hospital.
Police were called to the collision on Coity Road at around 12:43 p.m.
When officers arrived, they discovered injuries that were unrelated to the crash. Eleanor was transported to hospital, where she later died.
South Wales Police has confirmed the sequence of the collision and the discovery of the unrelated injuries. Investigators are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the alleged attack.
anor worked for Valleys to Coast, a social housing organisation responsible for the Ger-y-Nant complex.
The organisation expressed profound sadness over the death of its colleague.
Chief executive Jo Oak said Eleanor had been a valued member of the team and had made an important contribution to the organisation and the communities it served.
She added that Eleanor would be remembered with warmth and affection by those who had worked alongside her.
The incident also left residents shaken. The housing complex was the scene of a significant police operation, and residents were evacuated while officers dealt with the situation.
A neighbour, Sue Thomas, expressed sympathy for Eleanor’s loved ones, saying: “You don’t expect to go to work and not come home. I feel for her family.”
Her words reflect the shock felt by people living in the area, where an ordinary working day ended in devastating circumstances.
A 61-YEAR-OLD MAN ARRESTED
South Wales Police confirmed that a 61-year-old man from Bridgend had been arrested on suspicion of murder following the incident.
He remains in police custody, according to the latest official statement.
Police officers conducted a significant operation at the Ger-y-Nant complex, where the suspect was reportedly barricaded inside a room before officers intervened.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the arrest does not constitute a conviction.
Chief Superintendent Jason Rees said the force’s thoughts remained with Eleanor’s family and assured the community that detectives and specialist staff were investigating.
Police have appealed for witnesses and anyone with relevant information to come forward. They have also urged people not to speculate online about the circumstances of the death.
REMEMBERING ELEANOR BEYOND THE TRAGEDY
As detectives work to establish what happened, Eleanor’s family and friends are left with the painful task of grieving a woman whose life meant so much to them.
Her colleagues remember her dedication. Her friends remember her kindness. And her family remembers a loving mother whose presence brought strength and comfort to those closest to her.
The circumstances of her final journey have made the story especially heartbreaking: after suffering serious injuries, she attempted to reach the hospital herself but collapsed before she could get there.
Yet Eleanor’s life should be remembered for far more than the tragic events of that day.
She was a woman who cared for others, contributed to her community and was deeply loved by her family.
“She was our rock.”
Those words stand as a powerful tribute to a mother whose loss has left an irreplaceable gap in the lives of those who loved her.
As the investigation continues, her family is receiving support from specially trained officers.
Rest in peace, Eleanor Barnfield. May your family and friends find strength in one another and comfort in the memories of the love you gave them.
