“THIS CAN’T BE TRUE” — RUTE CARDOSO’S HEARTBREAKING FINAL MESSAGES TO DIOGO JOTA REVEALED

Just 11 days after their wedding, Rute was waiting for her husband to reply to a message about their special day. Instead, a late-night phone call would bring news she could barely comprehend.

For Rute Cardoso, it began with something ordinary: a message sent to the man she had loved since her teenage years.

She wanted to share a video of a surprise dance from their wedding with her husband, Liverpool football star Diogo Jota. They had married only 11 days earlier, and she was excited to show him the special moment.

At around 10:40 p.m. on the night of July 3, 2025, she sent him the video and a message saying she had something to show him when he stopped.

The message was delivered.

But it was never read.

Jota was travelling through Spain with his younger brother, André Silva, on their way towards Santander to catch a ferry back to the United Kingdom. Neither brother would make it to their destination.

Their Lamborghini crashed on a motorway in the province of Zamora, killing both men. Jota was 28; André was 25.

Now, passages from the new biography Diogo Jota: Forever In Our Hearts have revealed the agonising hours Rute endured as she tried desperately to discover why her husband had stopped responding.

At first, there was little reason for Rute to panic. She knew Diogo was travelling and assumed he would respond when it was safe to do so.

But as time passed, her messages stopped showing the expected delivery confirmations.

She tried again. Then again.

Still, there was no response.

Growing increasingly worried, Rute contacted the hotel where the brothers were expected to stay. They had not arrived.

She then reached out to André’s girlfriend, Paula, who had also been unable to contact him for several hours.

Rute called hospitals and attempted to reach the Spanish police, searching for any information that might explain the silence.

Every unanswered call made the uncertainty harder to bear.

Finally, her sister suggested contacting their uncle, Vítor, a lorry driver who could speak to Spanish traffic police using a Spanish telephone number.

Rute stayed connected to him while he made the call.

Then she heard him say two words that would change everything.

“Yes, two brothers.”

Rute did not immediately understand how the police could know the men were brothers. But the words filled her with dread.

As she listened in the quiet of the night, she heard her uncle tell her brother-in-law that the bodies were being taken away.

In the biography, Rute recalls that her mind went blank.

She began contacting family members, asking Diogo’s father to come immediately and telling André’s girlfriend to come over.

Even as the possibility of a tragedy became harder to ignore, she struggled to believe what she feared might be true.

A Spanish police officer subsequently confirmed the deaths by telephone, with psychologists present to support the family.

Yet the news felt impossible to accept.

Rute recalled repeating to her friend Catarina:

“This is a joke, it can’t be true. There’s no way in the world this can be true!”

She reportedly spent hours pacing around her sister’s garden, walking approximately 11 kilometres as she tried to process what was happening.

Sometimes, when the truth is too painful to face, the mind keeps searching for another explanation.

For Rute, every part of her wanted to believe that Diogo would somehow come home.

SHE WANTED TO SEE WHERE IT HAPPENED

When Rute travelled towards the mortuary, she asked the driver to follow the same route Diogo and André had taken.

She wanted to understand where the journey had ended.

When they reached kilometre 64, she saw that the wreckage of the car was still at the scene.

Overwhelmed, she tried to get out and move towards it. A police officer stopped her, urging her to remain at a distance so she would not have to witness the scene more closely.

At the mortuary, Rute asked to see her husband. She was not permitted to view his body directly, but officials showed her his form on a stretcher through a small window.

She was given his personal belongings, including his watch, wallet and wedding ring.

These were ordinary objects, but they now carried a significance no one could have imagined just days earlier.

The wedding ring, in particular, represented a marriage that had only just begun.

Rute later travelled back to Portugal in the van carrying Diogo’s body, accompanied by Catarina.

After hours of fear, unanswered messages and devastating confirmation, she was finally making the journey home without her husband.

A LOVE STORY CUT SHORT

Diogo and Rute had shared a relationship that began when they were teenagers. Over the years, they built a life together and welcomed three children.

Their wedding in June 2025 was meant to mark the beginning of a new chapter in their family’s story.

Instead, their time as husband and wife was cut tragically short.

Jota had enjoyed a remarkable football career, representing Portugal and becoming a much-loved player at Liverpool. But beyond the goals, trophies and stadium celebrations, he was also a husband, a father, a son and a brother.

His death, alongside André’s, devastated their family and sent shockwaves through the football world.

The new biography, Diogo Jota: Forever In Our Hearts, brings together memories and accounts from the people who knew them, offering a more intimate picture of the lives behind the headlines.

The book also supports the LFC Foundation, with Liverpool’s profits going towards a grassroots football programme established in Diogo’s name.

THE MESSAGE THAT WILL ALWAYS REMAIN

Perhaps the most heartbreaking detail is that Rute’s final message was not about football, fame or anything extraordinary.

She simply wanted to share a video of their wedding.

It was a small moment of love between two people who had expected to have many more years together.

The message remained unread, and the conversation they should have continued never happened.

For Rute and their children, the loss is immeasurable. For those who followed Jota’s career, his story is a reminder that behind every celebrated athlete is a person whose greatest meaning may be found far away from the pitch.

Diogo Jota’s legacy will live on through his family, his teammates, his supporters and the memories shared by those who knew him.

And for Rute, that wedding video will forever be connected to the last hours before her life changed beyond recognition.

Rest in peace, Diogo and André. May your family find strength in the love you left behind. 🤍
