AGAINST ALL ODDS: BABY BORN AT 23 WEEKS SURVIVES AFTER HEART STOPS FOR 40 MINUTES

A miracle baby born 17 weeks premature has defied extraordinary medical odds after doctors successfully revived him when his heart stopped for nearly 40 minutes.

Little Ryan Colquhoun weighed just 1 lb 7 oz (650 grams) when he entered the world at only 23 weeks at Princess Royal Maternity Hospital in Glasgow. Because he was extremely tiny and highly vulnerable to severe hypothermia, resourceful medical staff immediately wrapped him in a sandwich bag to retain his body heat while fighting tirelessly to save his life.

His mother, 25-year-old Claire Nobile, recalled the terrifying experience and praised the medical team for refusing to give up on her son. She proudly calls him “Ryan the Lion” because of his fierce determination to keep fighting despite the grim outlook.

Following his initial revival, Ryan faced a long and agonizing series of health complications in intensive care. He battled a collapsed lung, a brain bleed, an E. coli infection, sepsis, and severe hypothermia. Over the course of his hospital stay, he required four blood transfusions, spent 51 continuous days on a mechanical ventilator, and later underwent laser eye surgery to preserve his sight.

Against expectations, Ryan spent 133 days in the hospital before finally being discharged home. However, his struggle was not over; just weeks later, he suddenly stopped breathing during a family gathering and had to be revived with CPR before paramedics arrived. Now approaching his first birthday, Ryan is thriving at home while his mother raises funds for the hospital staff who saved his life, proving that even the tiniest babies can overcome the greatest hurdles.
