HERO MOTHER, 36, DIES SAVING HER TWO SONS FROM POWERFUL SEA CURRENTS IN THE BAHAMAS — HEARTBROKEN HUSBAND REVEALS HIS DESPERATE FINAL MOMENTS WITH HIS WIFE
BIMINI, THE BAHAMAS — A British father has spoken of the unimaginable moment he lost his beloved wife after she risked her life to save their two sons from powerful sea currents during what was supposed to be a joyful family holiday celebrating their upcoming 10th wedding anniversary.
Leanne Gregory, 36, from Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, died after entering the water to rescue her boys when they were swept away while snorkelling near the island of Bimini on October 20, 2026.
Her husband, Nathan Gregory, described his wife as his childhood sweetheart, soulmate and the foundation of their family. In a heartbreaking tribute, he recalled the desperate moments when he struggled to get help while trying to save his children and wife.
Both boys survived the terrifying ordeal. Leanne, however, could not be saved.
A DREAM FAMILY HOLIDAY TURNED INTO A NIGHTMARE
The family had travelled to the Bahamas for a special trip that was intended to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary early. The milestone was due to take place in December.
What should have been a treasured family memory instead became a tragedy that changed their lives forever.
According to Nathan’s account, the boys had been excitedly snorkelling in relatively shallow water while he and Leanne were organising towels and bags on the beach.
Then, in a matter of moments, the children encountered difficulties as a powerful current carried them away from safety.
Both parents immediately entered the water in a desperate attempt to reach their sons.
The terrifying ordeal unfolded in less than 10 minutes, Nathan later explained.
As the family struggled against the sea, the parents faced an unimaginable choice: trying to reach their children while battling dangerous water conditions themselves.
A MOTHER’S FINAL ACT OF COURAGE
Leanne managed to reach one of her sons and hold him above the water until help arrived.
But as she fought to keep her child safe, the conditions around her continued to deteriorate.
In a tribute shared online, Nathan explained that a sudden wave swept a rescue boat away from his wife, leaving her unable to reach safety.
“She held him until he was rescued but didn’t have the energy to save herself,” he wrote.
The words paint a devastating picture of a mother whose final moments were spent trying to protect her child.
Both boys were eventually brought to safety with help from people at the scene. Nathan also struggled through the water and desperately tried to attract the attention of a passing boat.
He later expressed profound gratitude to those who responded and helped rescue his family.
For Leanne’s loved ones, her actions have become a powerful testament to the depth of a mother’s love.
A HUSBAND’S DESPERATE FIGHT TO SAVE THE WOMAN HE LOVED
After Leanne was recovered from the water, Nathan attempted to revive her.
He reportedly performed CPR and tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while another woman helped him, hoping desperately that his wife could be saved.
Leanne was transported to a local medical facility, where she was pronounced dead despite efforts to save her.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed that the 36-year-old British woman had died after being swept away while attempting to rescue her sons.
Authorities said an investigation had been launched, with an autopsy planned to help establish the exact cause of death. Police stated that foul play was not suspected.
For Nathan, the tragedy meant losing the woman with whom he had shared almost his entire adult life.
“MY CHILDHOOD SWEETHEART” — A LOVE STORY CUT SHORT
Nathan revealed that he and Leanne had known each other since childhood and began their relationship when they were just 14 years old.
They had spent 22 years together, building a life and raising their two boys.
Speaking about his wife, he described the loss as unimaginable and struggled to find words adequate to express what she meant to him.
“She was the purest of people, the most generous kind and beautiful person who ever walked the earth,” he said.
He also described her as the perfect mother, the perfect wife and the foundation of their entire family.
Their upcoming anniversary had represented another milestone in a relationship that had endured from adolescence into adulthood.
Instead, Nathan has returned home to Nottinghamshire with their sons, facing a future that looks profoundly different from the one they had planned.
“We had our whole lives ahead of us and it has all been taken away,” he wrote in his tribute.
“A HERO IN LIFE AND IN DEATH”
Despite his overwhelming grief, Nathan expressed gratitude that both children survived.
He thanked the people in a boat who noticed his desperate signals and helped bring the children to safety. He also acknowledged the woman who assisted him as he attempted to revive Leanne.
Above all, he honoured his wife’s courage and the fact that she continued protecting their son even as she struggled to survive herself.
Nathan described her as a “hero in life and in death.”
His words have resonated with people moved by the family’s story, many of whom have expressed condolences and admiration for Leanne’s actions.
But behind the public tributes is a grieving husband and two children who must now face the loss of a wife and mother who meant everything to them.
A FAMILY FACING AN UNIMAGINABLE FUTURE
The family has since returned to the United Kingdom, where they are beginning to navigate the difficult days following the tragedy.
A fundraising appeal has also been established to support the children after the loss of their mother.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed that it was in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
For Nathan, the priority now is his sons, who survived an experience no child should have to witness.
His tribute expressed gratitude for their strength and for the people who helped bring them home safely.
Yet the absence of Leanne will be felt in countless everyday moments — family celebrations, school milestones, birthdays and the ordinary routines that once made up their shared life.
REST IN PEACE, LEANNE GREGORY
Leanne was just 36 years old. She had a husband who loved her, two sons who needed her and a future that her family had every reason to look forward to.
Her final moments were marked by an extraordinary effort to protect her children from danger.
Although her life ended in tragedy, her husband believes her courage will forever define the legacy she leaves behind.
For Nathan and their boys, the road ahead will be filled with grief, but also with memories of a woman who was deeply loved and whose place in their family can never be replaced.
May Nathan and his sons find strength in one another as they face this devastating loss. Rest peacefully, Leanne. Your love, courage and devotion to your children will never be forgotten.
