MIRACLE AT 23 WEEKS: THE REMARKABLE SURVIVAL OF BABY RYAN
Born 17 weeks premature at Princess Royal Maternity Hospital in Glasgow, Ryan Colquhoun entered the world weighing a fragile 1 lb 7 oz (650 grams). His birth at just 23 weeks presented immediate, life-threatening challenges. To protect his tiny body from dangerous hypothermia, medical staff quickly placed him inside a sandwich bag while initiating emergency procedures. Shortly after birth, Ryan’s heart stopped for approximately 40 minutes, but the medical team refused to give up, working tirelessly until his heart began beating again.

His mother, 25-year-old Claire Nobile, affectionately nicknamed him “Ryan the Lion” for his incredible determination to survive. Over the following months, the infant faced a grueling series of medical crises, including a collapsed lung, a brain bleed, E. coli infection, sepsis, and hypothermia. Ryan required four blood transfusions, spent 51 days connected to a ventilator, and later underwent specialized laser eye surgery to preserve his sight.

After spending 133 days in intensive care, Ryan was finally discharged. However, his journey home brought another scare when he stopped breathing during a family gathering, requiring immediate CPR before paramedics arrived. Despite these daunting setbacks, Ryan overcame every obstacle and is now approaching his first birthday doing well at home. Expressing immense gratitude, Claire is raising funds for the hospital staff whose extraordinary dedication saved her son, calling him living proof that even the smallest babies can survive against all odds.
