THE DEAD WOMAN’S MEDICAL RECORDS

THE DEAD WOMAN’S MEDICAL RECORDS
The ballroom fell silent.
Richard rushed toward me.
“Emily, you’re confused. You’re seriously ill!”
“No, Richard. I’m perfectly healthy. And I brought someone who can prove it.”
My attorney, Sarah Mitchell, stepped forward carrying a thick folder.
She placed the documents on a table.
“These records were altered to make Mrs. Carter appear terminally ill,” Sarah announced. “They were then used to support a fraudulent claim that she couldn’t manage her own finances.”
Vanessa stepped away from Richard.
“You told me your wife was dying!”
Richard grabbed my arm.
“Emily, please. We can discuss this privately.”
I pulled away.
“Did you discuss it privately when you transferred $3 million from my account?”
His face turned pale.
Sarah opened another folder.
“We’ve already obtained a court order temporarily freezing the disputed assets. And the hospital has confirmed the medical reports were falsified.”
Richard looked toward the exit.
But two detectives were waiting near the doors.
“You don’t understand!” he shouted. “I did everything for our future!”
I stared at the man who had slowly poisoned my trust, stolen my money, and convinced everyone I was dying.
Then Vanessa began crying.
“Richard told me Emily had already signed divorce papers.”
I turned toward her.
“Did he also tell you he used your name to open an account receiving my money?”
Vanessa froze.
Sarah handed her a bank statement.
Richard tried to run, but the detectives stopped him.
Months later, the court invalidated the fraudulent documents, and most of my stolen money was recovered. Richard faced criminal charges for fraud and forgery.
I sold our mansion and bought a small house overlooking the ocean.
For the first time in eighteen years, I could sleep without fear.
Richard had planned a future without me.
Instead, I built a future without him.
And the woman he told everyone was dying finally learned how to live.
