The Fire Was No Accident

The Fire Was No Accident

The rifle shot shattered the kitchen window.

Ethan pulled Grace to the floor as broken glass scattered across the wooden boards.

“Stay down!”

But Ethan barely heard the next shot.

His mind was trapped on Grace’s words.

The man outside had been there the night his wife and son died.

Three years earlier, everyone had called the fire an accident.

A fallen lantern.

Dry timber.

Terrible luck.

Ethan had believed them.

Until now.

“Tell me everything,” he demanded.

Grace’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel discovered that Victor Kane ordered several ranches burned when their owners refused to sell. Your property was on that list.”

Ethan felt the room spinning.

“My wife and boy…”

Grace nodded.

“Daniel found a payment record. Kane hired a man named Silas Crowe to start that fire.”

Outside, a rough voice interrupted.

“Come out, Walker! You can’t protect her forever!”

Ethan recognized the name.

Silas Crowe had visited his ranch three days before the fire, offering an enormous sum for the property.

Ethan had refused.

Now he understood why his family had paid the price.

He moved toward the back door, but Grace suddenly doubled over.

A sharp pain seized her stomach.

“Ethan… something’s wrong.”

His anger vanished beneath a new terror.

Grace clutched her belly, struggling to breathe.

The baby was coming.

Too early.

And four armed men were surrounding the house.

Ethan carried her into the cellar, placed blankets beneath her, and returned upstairs.

He knew the ranch better than anyone.

Including the narrow irrigation trench running beneath the barn.

He slipped outside through the cellar passage, reached the stable, and released the horses.

The startled animals thundered across the yard.

Two riders chased after them.

A third galloped toward the barn.

Ethan seized his chance, disarmed the man near the fence, and forced him to retreat.

But Silas Crowe remained at the front door.

“Your wife begged me to spare the boy,” Silas shouted. “Did you know that?”

Ethan froze.

Then Silas laughed.

“She also begged me not to tell you what she discovered.”

Before Ethan could respond, the cellar door creaked behind him.

Grace stood there, pale and shaking.

In her hands was the open cedar box.

“Ethan,” she whispered, “Daniel kept one more secret.”

She lifted a faded photograph.

Ethan stared at it.

His wife stood beside Daniel Miller.

Both were smiling.

The photograph had been taken weeks before the fire.

On its back, written in his wife’s handwriting, were six words:

If anything happens, trust Daniel Miller.

Ethan looked up in disbelief.

His wife had known about the conspiracy.

And Grace whispered the revelation that changed everything.

“Ethan… Daniel wasn’t investigating Kane alone.”

Outside, Silas began breaking down the door.

And Grace reached deeper into the box.

“There is one more document. It explains why your wife was really targeted.”
