28-YEAR-OLD JOGGER STABBED TWICE IN THE NECK WHILE RUNNING IN BROOKLYN — FATHER FOUND HER AFTER THEIR FINAL PHONE CALL

Katie Suarez had been speaking to her father just minutes before she was attacked along a popular waterfront running path. Her attacker remains at large as police appeal for witnesses and review surveillance footage.

A 28-year-old woman is fighting for her life after being stabbed twice in the neck while jogging along a waterfront path in Brooklyn, New York.

Katie Suarez was attacked shortly before 8 p.m. on Friday, October 30, while running along the Shore Parkway Greenway in the Bath Beach neighbourhood.

The young woman had reportedly spoken to her father by telephone just minutes before the attack. She told him she was approximately half a mile away and expected to meet her parents shortly.

But Katie never arrived.

When she stopped answering her phone, her parents became increasingly worried and began searching for her. Her father eventually found her near Bay 17th Street and Shore Parkway, suffering from serious injuries.

Emergency services were called, and Katie was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, where she remained in critical condition.

Reports published on November 1 and 2 offered differing descriptions of her medical condition. The New York Post, citing law-enforcement sources, reported that she had been declared brain-dead and remained on life support. However, the NYPD’s Chief of Detectives described her condition publicly as grave and very critical. Her family and hospital had not issued a public confirmation of the more specific medical report at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, police are continuing an intensive investigation and searching for the person responsible.

The hours leading up to the stabbing began like an ordinary evening for Katie.

She had finished work at a TD Bank branch in the Bay Parkway shopping area, where she had reportedly worked as a bank teller for more than five years.

According to information reported by the New York Post, Katie met her mother near her workplace shortly after finishing her shift at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The meeting was part of a family routine. Her parents would often meet her after work, although her father was running late that evening.

Katie had changed out of her work clothes and into her running gear. She handed her work clothes to her mother before setting off alone for a run along the waterfront.

She reportedly headed west along the Belt Parkway toward the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

At around 8 p.m., her father called to discuss where they would meet.

During that conversation, Katie told him she was about half a mile away — a distance she could reportedly cover in approximately five minutes.

Nothing during the call reportedly suggested that she was in danger.

But when Katie failed to arrive at the agreed meeting place, her father called again.

This time, she did not answer.

Her parents separated to search for their daughter. Her father eventually located her near Bay 17th Street and Shore Parkway.

He found her with serious stab wounds and desperately sought help from a passer-by, asking them to call emergency services.

Investigators say Katie was attacked while running along the Shore Parkway Greenway, a popular route used by joggers, cyclists, walkers and local residents.

According to reports citing law-enforcement sources, she suffered two stab wounds to the neck.

The New York Post reported that she managed to run approximately 100 feet after the attack before collapsing.

Police and emergency personnel responded to the scene before she was transported to hospital.

The attack has left residents shocked, particularly because the waterfront path is regularly used by people exercising and spending time outdoors.

Some neighbours told local media they were frightened by the incident and concerned about safety along the route.

A small memorial was also reported near the victim’s home as neighbours and members of the community expressed their support for her family.

POLICE RELEASE HER PHOTOGRAPH AS SEARCH FOR ATTACKER CONTINUES

The NYPD has released a photograph of Katie as detectives appeal for information that could help identify the person responsible.

Investigators have been working across the area, reviewing available surveillance footage and gathering evidence.

The search has involved specialist resources, including K-9 units, aviation teams, divers and drones.

Police are also asking drivers who travelled along the nearby Belt Parkway that evening to check whether their dashcam cameras captured anything unusual.

According to the NYPD’s public appeal, investigators want to hear from anyone who may have seen Katie or noticed suspicious activity between approximately 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. on Friday, October 30.

The area of interest includes the eastbound bike path along the Belt Parkway between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street.

Authorities have not publicly identified a suspect, and no arrests had been announced in the latest reports.

The investigation remains active.

INVESTIGATORS EXAMINE POSSIBLE MOTIVE

One of the most troubling aspects of the case is that investigators have not established why Katie was attacked.

The New York Post, citing law-enforcement sources, reported that detectives believed the assault may have been random.

Those sources said Katie’s pink mobile phone and jewellery were still with her, and investigators had not identified evidence suggesting a robbery or sexual motive.

However, police have not publicly confirmed a definitive motive.

Katie’s family is also waiting for answers.

Her cousin, 19-year-old Gianluca Frances, spoke to the New York Post outside the hospital on Sunday.

“It’s going to come to light whoever truly did it,” he said.

He described the situation as an awful time for the family and expressed his anger over the attack.

For relatives, the uncertainty surrounding the incident has made an already devastating situation even harder.

COMMUNITY CALLS FOR GREATER SAFETY ALONG THE WATERFRONT

The attack has also prompted concerns about safety along the Shore Parkway Greenway.

Residents who regularly use the route told CBS New York that they were shocked by the violence.

Some questioned whether the path had sufficient lighting and surveillance, particularly during evening hours.

New York State Senator Stephen Chan also called for improvements to lighting and security cameras along the waterfront route.

He said better lighting and additional monitoring could help improve safety for people using the path.

The NYPD has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the person responsible, according to CBS New York’s November 1 report.

POLICE URGE WITNESSES TO COME FORWARD

Detectives are asking anyone who was in the Bath Beach area on Friday evening to contact authorities.

Even a seemingly minor observation could help investigators reconstruct Katie’s movements and identify the person who attacked her.

Police are particularly interested in:

  • Anyone who was walking, jogging or cycling along the Shore Parkway Greenway between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street.
  • Drivers who travelled along the nearby Belt Parkway between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m.
  • Anyone with dashcam or surveillance footage from the surrounding streets.
  • Anyone who noticed suspicious behaviour or a person acting unusually in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). Spanish-speaking callers can use 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Tips can also be submitted through the NYPD Crime Stoppers website or by contacting @NYPDTips on X.

All calls are kept confidential.

For Katie’s family, an ordinary evening that began with work and a familiar run has turned into an unimaginable nightmare.

Her father had spoken to her only minutes before she was found injured. He had expected to meet his daughter, but instead became the person who discovered her after the attack.

As detectives continue searching for answers, her loved ones and the local community are hoping the person responsible will be identified.

Anyone who witnessed something that evening is urged to come forward.
