💔 She Earned Her Pilot’s License Before Her Driver’s License — At 20, Nathalia Filgueiras Was Among Nine Killed in Florida Learjet Tragedy
FLORIDA — A young woman’s lifelong dream of flying ended in tragedy Sunday when the private jet she was helping operate plunged from the sky and crashed into a South Florida neighborhood, taking the lives of all nine people aboard.
Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, a 20-year-old co-pilot from Boca Raton, was identified by her grieving family as one of the victims of the November 1 Learjet 60 disaster in Palm Beach County.
Just three years earlier, Filgueiras had made headlines for an extraordinary achievement: earning her pilot’s license at 17, while still attending high school and before obtaining her driver’s license.
Now, her inspiring journey from a teenage aviation student to a professional pilot has become one of the most heartbreaking stories emerging from the Florida tragedy.

A Childhood Dream That Took Flight
For Nathalia, aviation was never simply a career choice. It was a passion that began during childhood.
Born into a Brazilian family living in Florida, she developed an early fascination with airplanes through her father, Allan Filgueiras, who is also a pilot.
Her sister, Giulia, told NBC6 that Nathalia learned to fly from their father and that aviation was her greatest passion.
While many teenagers were focused on earning their driver’s licenses, Nathalia was working toward an achievement few students her age could imagine.
In October 2023, at just 17 years old, she earned her private pilot’s license while attending West Boca Raton Community High School.
She participated in the school’s specialized aviation academy, which provided students with opportunities to learn flight principles, practice using simulators and drones, and pursue aviation qualifications.
The Palm Beach County School District helped cover the cost of her flight training.
Her achievement attracted local media attention, turning the ambitious teenager into an example of what young people could accomplish through determination and access to aviation education.
By 2026, that teenage dream had become a professional career.

A Promising Career Cut Short
According to her mother, Camila Corteleti, Nathalia had accumulated more than 1,300 hours of flight experience despite being only 20 years old.
She had been working as a commercial pilot for approximately nine months and was employed by Upper Jets, a private charter aviation company based in Fort Lauderdale.
Although young, Nathalia had already progressed far beyond the initial stages of flight training.
Her aviation credentials qualified her to serve as a pilot on the Learjet involved in Sunday’s flight, although she was not authorized to act as the aircraft’s pilot in command.
Her family described her as a dedicated, responsible young woman who had worked tirelessly to pursue the career she loved.
She was also approaching another milestone: her 21st birthday in January 2027.
Instead, her family is now mourning a daughter whose future had once appeared filled with possibilities.

The Final Flight From Texas to the Bahamas
On Sunday, November 1, Nathalia was serving as co-pilot aboard a Learjet 60 traveling from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
The aircraft was carrying nine people, including passengers and crew members.
As the jet approached South Florida, the crew encountered deteriorating weather conditions.
According to air traffic control recordings and flight-tracking information, the aircraft was traveling at approximately 35,000 feet when the pilots reported turbulence, ice accumulation and precipitation.
The crew requested permission to climb to a higher altitude.
What followed was a terrifying sequence of events that unfolded within minutes.
The aircraft suddenly began descending at an alarming rate, with flight-tracking information indicating vertical speeds exceeding 20,000 feet per minute.
During the emergency, a pilot radioed that the aircraft was descending rapidly and issued repeated distress calls.
The final communications included an acknowledgment that the aircraft was heading toward the ground.
At approximately 12:50 p.m., the jet crashed in Greenacres, a community about seven miles southwest of West Palm Beach.
The impact caused a massive explosion, sending flames and thick black smoke into the air.
All nine people aboard were killed.

A Heartbreaking Message Before the Crash
One of the most emotional details surrounding Nathalia’s final moments was shared by her stepfather, Thiago Corteleti.
According to his account to the New York Post, Nathalia had reportedly sent a message to her boyfriend, Justin, approximately ten minutes before the crash.
She told him that the aircraft was experiencing turbulence and ice.
The message suggests she was aware of the difficult weather conditions shortly before the emergency unfolded.
Her family also told reporters they believed Nathalia could be heard in the aircraft’s final radio communications.
However, investigators have not publicly established which crew member made each transmission or who was controlling the aircraft when it entered its final descent.
The circumstances surrounding the loss of control remain under federal investigation.

A Mother’s Devastating Words
For Nathalia’s mother, the tragedy brought an unimaginable end to a dream she had watched her daughter pursue since childhood.
Speaking to the New York Post, Camila Corteleti reflected on the fear that sometimes accompanied her daughter’s passion for flying.
“I wanted her to live her dream, but I knew that her dream was going to be the thing that would take her away from me,” she said.
Her words capture the painful conflict faced by a parent who wanted her child to follow her ambitions while understanding the risks associated with aviation.
Camila had watched Nathalia progress from a teenage student learning to fly into a professional pilot trusted to operate sophisticated business aircraft.
The daughter she had proudly supported through years of training was now among the victims of one of Florida’s most devastating aviation incidents of the year.
For the family, the loss is not simply about an aircraft accident. It is about a young woman whose life revolved around the sky, whose birthday was only months away, and whose ambitions had barely begun to unfold.

Eight Other Lives Lost
The tragedy also claimed the lives of a technology entrepreneur, his family and others traveling aboard the aircraft.
Among the victims identified by relatives were Austin-based technology entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp, and their two young children, Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2.
Also identified were Anita Maria Cetina, who helped care for the children, and passengers Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr.
The other pilot was identified in subsequent reporting as 55-year-old Jeff Gregory.
Robinson was known for his work in the technology industry, including his involvement with email marketing company Robly and Retention.com.
The tragedy left multiple families grieving, with the deaths of two young children adding to the devastating human toll.
The plane came down close to homes and passing vehicles, creating a frightening scene for residents who witnessed the impact.
The crash also prompted evacuations in a nearby mobile home community as emergency crews secured the area.

Investigators Examine Weather and Possible Midair Breakup
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating what caused the Learjet to lose control.
During a November 2 briefing, NTSB board member Tom Chapman said investigators had found indications that the aircraft may have started breaking apart before striking the ground.
Investigators are examining debris, flight data, the aircraft’s final communications and the weather conditions encountered during the flight.
Reports of ice accumulation and significant turbulence have made weather an important focus of the inquiry.
However, officials have emphasized that the exact cause has not yet been determined.
The NTSB’s findings will be critical in understanding how the aircraft went from routine flight to an uncontrollable descent in such a short period.
There is currently no official finding attributing the crash to Nathalia, the other pilot, aircraft maintenance or a specific weather phenomenon.
Federal investigators must establish the sequence of events before drawing conclusions about responsibility or contributing factors.

Remembering the Young Woman Behind the Headlines
As investigators work to determine what happened, Nathalia’s story has drawn attention for reasons extending far beyond the final minutes of the flight.
She was a teenager who refused to wait until adulthood to pursue her dream.
At 17, she was already licensed to fly.
At 20, she had accumulated more than 1,300 hours in the air and had turned her passion into a career.
Her family remembers a young woman who loved aviation, worked hard and was proud to follow in her father’s footsteps.
Those achievements now stand alongside the devastating reality that her life ended before her 21st birthday.
For her loved ones, no investigation can restore the years they expected to share with her. But the story of Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras will be remembered not only for the tragedy of her final flight, but also for the determination that helped her reach the skies at such a young age.
She learned to fly before she learned to drive. And although her journey ended far too soon, her remarkable passion for aviation remains an important part of her story.
