MOTHER AND DAUGHTER FOUND DEAD AFTER SUSPECTED GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACK IN CANADA — THEY HAD GONE FOR A WALK ON A FAMILIAR TRAIL NEAR HOME
Jennifer “Jenny” Balcarras, 48, and her daughter Selah Reed were discovered dead after disappearing during a walk near Bella Coola, British Columbia. Their heartbreaking deaths have devastated their family and renewed concerns about wildlife safety in a community that experienced another serious grizzly bear attack last year.
A mother and daughter who went out for what was believed to be a familiar, casual walk near their home in western Canada have both been found dead following a suspected grizzly bear attack.
Jennifer Balcarras, known as Jenny, 48, and her daughter, Selah Reed, were reported missing after they failed to return from their walk near Bella Coola, British Columbia.
Their remains were discovered on separate days in the Snooka West Trail area, prompting an investigation by police and the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service.
The tragedy has left their loved ones devastated, particularly because the pair had reportedly been walking in an area they knew well and did not consider particularly remote.
A routine walk turned into a desperate search
According to reports, Jenny and Selah went for a walk on Saturday afternoon, October 31, 2026, near their home in the Bella Coola area.
Their family became increasingly concerned when the pair did not return as expected. Jenny had also been expected to join an online family meeting that evening but never appeared.
After attempts to reach them were unsuccessful, relatives reported them missing on Sunday morning.
Their vehicle was later located near a trailhead in the Snooka West Trail area, prompting search efforts involving police, search-and-rescue personnel and conservation officers.
Jennifer’s remains were located on Monday afternoon, November 2. Selah was found deceased on Tuesday afternoon, November 3.
Authorities said evidence suggested that a bear may have been involved. The exact circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
Remembering Jenny: A devoted mother and talented art therapist
Beyond the heartbreaking circumstances of her death, family members are remembering Jenny as a deeply caring woman whose life revolved around her loved ones, creativity and helping others.
She was a mother of four and worked as an art therapist, supporting people through creative expression and emotional care.
Jenny had spent years living in coastal communities, including Bella Bella in British Columbia and parts of Alaska, before continuing her work in the Bella Coola region.
A 2023 introduction by the Hailika’as Heiltsuk Health Centre Society described her experience working with clients ranging from children to older adults. Her approach was trauma-informed, reflecting her understanding of the emotional needs of the people she helped.
Her brother Matthew Balcarras remembered her as someone who combined gentleness with remarkable inner strength.
He described her as petite but incredibly strong, saying those qualities were part of what made her special as an art therapist.
Her family also remembered her love of books, music, playing guitar, singing, painting and spending time outdoors.
She was not simply a professional who helped others. She was a central figure in her family, someone whose presence connected the people around her.
Selah Reed remembered as a gentle soul who shared her mother’s passions
Selah was remembered by relatives as a quiet, sweet and gentle young woman who shared many of her mother’s interests.
She worked as an educational assistant and was also studying part-time online.
Among the things she loved were ballet, art and hiking. Family members said she and Jenny were particularly close, often enjoying the same activities and spending time together outdoors.
Her uncle Josh Balcarras described the mother and daughter as being inseparable, explaining that whenever Jenny went hiking, Selah was right beside her.
Selah also adored her cat, Suga, whom she reportedly carried in a special backpack with a bubble window.
Those small details have become especially painful reminders for relatives now mourning both women.
The family has lost not only a mother and daughter, but two people whose lives were closely intertwined.
Conservation officers searching for the bear
The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service is investigating the suspected attack and has deployed officers to locate and trap any bears that may have been involved.
Inspector Jeff Tyre said the evidence indicates a possible bear encounter, while authorities continue collecting and examining evidence to establish what happened.
Officials have urged residents and visitors to stay away from the Snooka West Trail area while the investigation and wildlife response continue.
The Conservation Officer Service has also explained that if a bear is confirmed to be responsible, it may be dispatched under provincial human-wildlife conflict response guidelines to protect public safety.
No final determination about the animal or the precise circumstances of the attack had been announced in the reports available at the time of publication.
Community remembers another devastating bear attack
The deaths have brought renewed attention to a previous grizzly bear incident near Bella Coola.
In November 2025, a grizzly bear attacked a group of schoolchildren and teachers during an outing in the same community.
Eleven people were injured. Four victims — one adult and three children — suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to hospital in Vancouver.
The bear involved in that incident was never located, despite an extensive search.
The two incidents have left the small community facing renewed grief and concern about the risks of living and spending time in an area where grizzly bears are part of the natural environment.
Samuel Schooner, elected Chief of the Nuxalk Nation, offered condolences to the victims’ family and acknowledged the wider emotional impact on the community, including those affected by the previous attack.
He said the full circumstances were still unfolding and recognized the trauma that the tragedy would bring to the victims’ loved ones and the community.
A family left mourning two lives lost together
For Jenny and Selah’s relatives, the loss is especially difficult to comprehend.
The pair had reportedly set out for a walk on a familiar trail, close to home. What began as an ordinary afternoon ended in a tragedy that has permanently changed their family.
Jenny leaves behind four children, siblings and loved ones who remember her as a creative, compassionate woman who devoted herself to helping others.
Selah is remembered as a gentle young woman who shared her mother’s love of art and the outdoors.
As investigators continue working to establish exactly what happened, their family is left grieving two lives that were deeply connected.
