CALIFORNIA FATHER KILLED IN HORRIFIC I-80 CRASH AS WIFE FIGHTS FOR HER LIFE — THEIR ONLY CHILD NOW FACES AN UNIMAGINABLE FUTURE
Greg Tobias, 29, died after the family’s Hyundai Tucson overturned on Interstate 80 in the early hours of Saturday morning. His wife, Vanessa, was critically injured, leaving their young son Austin facing the loss of his father while his mother remains hospitalized.
A California family is facing an unimaginable tragedy after a devastating multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 claimed the life of a young father and left his wife fighting for her life.
Greg Tobias, 29, of Vacaville, was killed in the collision early Saturday morning after the blue Hyundai Tucson he was traveling in with his wife, Vanessa Tobias, overturned on the freeway.
Their only child, Austin, is now facing life without his father as his mother continues to receive treatment for critical injuries.
A rollover crash triggered a chain-reaction collision
According to the California Highway Patrol, Greg and Vanessa were traveling eastbound on Interstate 80, just west of Lagoon Valley Road, at approximately 2:35 a.m. when their Hyundai Tucson overturned.
The vehicle came to rest blocking the roadway, leaving the couple in a dangerous position as traffic continued along the freeway.
Moments later, three other vehicles collided with the overturned SUV, setting off a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles.
When officers from the California Highway Patrol’s Solano Area arrived, they found Greg suffering from fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Vanessa, who had been riding in the passenger seat, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Kaiser Vacaville for emergency medical treatment.
A 60-year-old woman driving a Kia was also seriously injured and transported to the same hospital. The occupants of a blue BMW coupe and a gray Buick SUV were not injured.
Sister launches fundraiser as Vanessa remains hospitalized
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Vanessa’s sister, Charlize Estebez, organized a GoFundMe campaign to help the family manage the overwhelming expenses left behind by the crash.
The fundraiser is intended to assist with Vanessa’s medical costs and Greg’s funeral expenses as loved ones try to navigate the difficult days ahead.
In a heartbreaking message shared on the campaign, Estebez described the devastating impact of losing Greg and the uncertainty surrounding Vanessa’s recovery.
The family is now confronting two painful realities at once: mourning a husband and father who will never return home, while holding on to hope that Vanessa will survive.
Remembering Greg as a devoted husband and father
Estebez remembered Greg as much more than a victim of a tragic accident.
He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a son, a brother and a friend whose presence meant so much to the people around him.
His sudden death has left what his sister-in-law described as a tremendous void in the lives of everyone who loved him.
For their son Austin, the loss is especially heartbreaking. The little boy now faces a future without his father, while the family continues to hope that his mother will recover.
As relatives and friends come together to support Vanessa and Austin, the fundraiser has become one way for the community to help ease some of the financial burden during an incredibly painful time.
CHP continues investigating the circumstances
Investigators believe Greg and Vanessa were both wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred.
Authorities have not made any arrests, and investigators do not currently believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.
The circumstances that caused the Hyundai Tucson to overturn in the first place remain under investigation.
For now, the family’s attention is focused on grieving Greg, supporting Austin and hoping for Vanessa’s recovery.
One early-morning journey on a California freeway has changed their lives forever. A husband and father is gone, a mother is fighting to survive, and a young child is left waiting for the family he knew to somehow become whole again.
