MOTHER, 48, AND DAUGHTER, 20, FOUND DEAD AFTER SUSPECTED GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACK — FAMILY LEFT HEARTBROKEN
Jennifer “Jenny” Balcarras and her youngest daughter, Selah Reed, shared a love of hiking and the outdoors. Their deaths near a familiar trail in British Columbia have devastated their family and shaken the small community.
BELLA COOLA, BRITISH COLUMBIA — A mother and her youngest daughter who loved spending time outdoors together have been found dead following a suspected grizzly bear attack in British Columbia, leaving their family and community facing an unimaginable loss.
The victims were identified as 48-year-old Jennifer “Jenny” Balcarras and her 20-year-old daughter, Selah Reed.
The two were reported missing on Sunday, November 1, after family members became concerned when they could no longer reach them.
According to relatives, Jenny and Selah had gone for a walk on Saturday afternoon. Their vehicle was later discovered near the Snooka West Trail, prompting a search of the surrounding area.
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service confirmed that Jenny’s remains were located on Monday, November 2. Selah was found the following afternoon, November 3, during search efforts involving conservation officers and the RCMP.
Authorities believe a bear may have been involved in the deaths. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not confirmed whether one or multiple bears were responsible.
A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER WHO WERE ALWAYS TOGETHER
For Jenny and Selah, spending time outdoors was something they genuinely enjoyed.
Family members said the two shared a particularly close relationship and regularly went hiking together. The trail where they disappeared was familiar to them and only a short drive from their home.
What began as an ordinary afternoon walk became a tragedy that their loved ones could never have imagined.
Jenny’s brother, Josh Balcarras, described the family’s growing concern as the hours passed without hearing from the pair.
At first, there was simply no response. Then one day passed, followed by another night, and the family began to fear the worst.
The loss has been especially difficult because Jenny and Selah were not only mother and daughter but also close companions who shared many of the same interests.
As one family member described their relationship, they were like two peas in a pod.
REMEMBERING JENNY: AN ARTIST, MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER
Jenny had recently moved to Bella Coola to begin a new chapter in her life.
She had started working as an art therapist at a local school, bringing her creativity and compassion into her work with children and the community.
Her family remembered her as a talented artist and a strong, caring woman who loved painting, music, reading and spending time outdoors.
She was also a mother of four and a grandmother.
Her brother Matthew spoke about her artistic ability and the important role she played within the family.
Jenny had created artwork and murals in the homes of people she loved, leaving behind personal reminders of her creativity and the happiness she brought to those around her.
Although she had only recently moved to Bella Coola, she had already begun building a new life and pursuing meaningful work in the community.
Her sudden death has left her family grieving not only the person they loved but also the future they had hoped to share with her.
S
ELAH: A GENTLE AND CREATIVE YOUNG WOMAN
Selah was Jenny’s youngest daughter.
At 20, she was still building her future while attending school part-time and working as an educational assistant.
Family members described her as gentle, quiet and creative.
She enjoyed ballet, art and hiking, interests that reflected the close bond she shared with her mother.
Those who knew them said Selah often accompanied Jenny on outdoor adventures. When her mother went hiking, Selah was right beside her.
Her family now faces the heartbreaking reality of losing both women in the same tragedy.
For their loved ones, the memories of their shared walks, conversations and everyday moments have become especially precious.
INVESTIGATORS SEARCH FOR THE BEAR OR BEARS INVOLVED
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service is investigating the deaths as a suspected fatal bear attack.
Inspector Jeff Tyre said evidence at the scene suggested that a bear may have been involved.
Conservation officers and police have been working to secure the area, investigate the circumstances and locate any animals that may have been involved.
Officials have also said it is not yet clear whether one bear or multiple bears were responsible.
Any bears captured will be assessed. If an animal is confirmed to have been involved in the fatal incident, it will be killed under provincial human-wildlife conflict response guidelines to protect public safety.
Authorities have urged residents and visitors to stay away from the Snooka West Trail area while the investigation continues.
The public warning is intended both to reduce the risk of another encounter and to give investigators the space needed to complete their work.
A COMMUNITY REMEMBERS ANOTHER BEAR ATTACK
The tragedy has brought renewed attention to a previous grizzly bear attack in the Bella Coola area.
In November 2025, a bear attacked a group of schoolchildren and teachers during an outdoor school activity.
Eleven people were injured, including three children and one teacher who suffered serious injuries. The remaining seven people were treated at the scene.
Despite an extensive search, authorities were unable to locate the bear believed to have been responsible.
The latest deaths have understandably raised concerns among residents about safety in the surrounding wilderness.
Bella Coola is located in a region where people and wildlife share the same natural environment. Grizzly bears are part of the local landscape, and encounters can carry serious risks.
Community members are now waiting for further information from conservation officers as they work to determine what happened to Jenny and Selah.
TWO LIVES REMEMBERED, ONE FAMILY FOREVER CHANGED
For Jenny’s family, the tragedy has taken away two people who meant so much to one another.
Jenny had recently started a new chapter in Bella Coola, while Selah was pursuing her education and building her own future.
They shared a love of creativity, nature and spending time together. Their final walk was supposed to be another ordinary moment in a relationship filled with countless shared experiences.
Instead, their family is left with memories and a loss that words cannot adequately describe.
As the investigation continues, loved ones are remembering Jenny as a talented artist, devoted mother and grandmother, and Selah as a gentle young woman with a creative spirit.
Their story is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can change.
Jenny and Selah went out together, as they had done many times before.
They never made it home.
