MOTHER AND DAUGHTER, 48 AND 20, FOUND DEAD AFTER SUSPECTED GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACK — “THEY WERE LIKE TWO PEAS IN A POD”
Jenny Balcarras and her youngest daughter, Selah Reed, shared an extraordinary bond and a love of the outdoors. Their deaths during a walk near their home in British Columbia have left their family and the Bella Coola community devastated.
BELLA COOLA, BRITISH COLUMBIA — What was supposed to be another peaceful afternoon outdoors became an unimaginable tragedy for a family in British Columbia.
Jennifer “Jenny” Balcarras, 48, and her youngest daughter, Selah Reed, 20, were found dead following a suspected grizzly bear attack near Bella Coola, Canada.
The mother and daughter had gone for a walk on Saturday afternoon, October 31. When they failed to return and family members could no longer reach them, concern quickly grew.
Their vehicle was later discovered near the Snooka West Trail, prompting a search of the surrounding area.
Jenny was found on Monday, November 2. Selah was located the following day, November 3.
Authorities are investigating the deaths as a suspected bear attack. The exact circumstances remain under investigation, and officials have not confirmed whether one or multiple bears were involved.
For their family, however, the news brought a devastating reality: two people who had shared so much of their lives together were suddenly gone.
A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER WHO SHARED EVERYTHING
Jenny and Selah were known for their close relationship.
Family members described them as inseparable, saying they regularly spent time together outdoors and enjoyed exploring the natural surroundings near their home.
The trail where they were last seen was familiar to them and located only a short drive away.
Their shared love of hiking and nature was part of what made their relationship so special. They were not simply mother and daughter; they were companions who enjoyed experiencing life side by side.
One family member described the pair as being “like two peas in a pod.”
That closeness has made the loss particularly difficult for those who knew them. Their loved ones are now remembering the ordinary moments that once seemed endless: conversations, walks, shared interests and the comfort of having one another nearby.
JENNY: A TALENTED ARTIST AND DEVOTED MOTHER
Jenny had recently moved to Bella Coola to begin a new chapter in her life.
She had started working as an art therapist at a local school, where she could combine her artistic abilities with her desire to help others.
Her family remembered her as a talented artist, a strong and compassionate woman, and someone who found happiness in painting, music, reading and spending time with loved ones.
Jenny was also a mother of four and a grandmother.
Her creativity was an important part of who she was. She enjoyed making art and creating meaningful pieces for the people around her.
Her move to Bella Coola represented an opportunity to build a new life and contribute to the local community.
Now, those who loved her are left remembering a woman whose artistic talent and caring nature touched many lives.
SELAH WAS BUILDING A FUTURE OF HER OWN
At just 20 years old, Selah was beginning to establish her own path.
She worked as an educational assistant while continuing her studies part-time.
Family members described her as gentle, quiet and creative. She enjoyed ballet, art and hiking — interests that reflected the close connection she shared with her mother.
Selah often accompanied Jenny on outdoor adventures. The two enjoyed spending time together, making the walk near Snooka West Trail part of a familiar routine.
Her future held so many possibilities.
She was still learning, working and discovering what life might bring. Her sudden death has left family members grieving not only the person they knew and loved but also the years and experiences they will never get to share with her.
INVESTIGATORS EXAMINE A SUSPECTED BEAR ATTACK
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service is leading the investigation into the deaths.
Authorities have described the incident as a suspected bear attack, with grizzly bears among the animals being considered.
Conservation officers and police have been searching the area and examining evidence to determine what happened.
Officials have not confirmed the identity of any bear involved or whether more than one animal may have been present.
Authorities have warned residents and visitors to stay away from the Snooka West Trail while the investigation continues.
They have also indicated that any bear captured will be assessed. If an animal is confirmed to have been involved in the fatal incident, it may be euthanized under wildlife conflict response procedures.
The investigation is particularly concerning for residents because Bella Coola has experienced another serious bear encounter in recent years.
A COMMUNITY STILL REMEMBERS A PREVIOUS BEAR ATTACK
In November 2025, a bear attacked a group of elementary schoolchildren and teachers during an outdoor school activity in the Bella Coola area.
Eleven people were injured. Three children and one teacher suffered serious injuries, while seven others received treatment at the scene.
Despite an extensive search, authorities were unable to identify the bear believed to have been responsible.
The deaths of Jenny and Selah have renewed concerns about wildlife encounters in the region, where communities and visitors regularly share the landscape with bears.
Officials continue to urge people to follow safety warnings and avoid the affected trail area.
TWO LIVES, COUNTLESS MEMORIES
For Jenny’s family, the loss is almost impossible to put into words.
Jenny was a mother, grandmother, artist and educator who had recently begun a new chapter in Bella Coola. Selah was a young woman with a gentle personality, creative interests and a future still unfolding.
They shared a love of the outdoors and, most importantly, shared so much of their lives with each other.
Their final walk was something they had likely done many times before. It was an ordinary activity for two people who enjoyed being together.
But this time, they never returned home.
As investigators continue working to understand what happened, their family and community are holding on to the memories of two women whose lives were deeply connected.
Jenny and Selah will be remembered not only for the tragic circumstances of their deaths, but for the love they shared, the people they cared for and the lives they touched.
Two precious lives. Countless memories. And a family forever changed.
