Part 2: The Secret Behind His Gray Eyes

Part 2: The Secret Behind His Gray Eyes
Ruth stared at the wounded stranger.

“Who’s coming?”

The man struggled to answer, but his breathing grew shallow. His eyes closed before another word escaped.

Outside, the blizzard rattled the windows.

Ruth worked through the night, cleaning his wound, changing bloodied bandages, and keeping the stove burning.

By dawn, the stranger was still alive.

When he finally opened his eyes, he found Ruth sitting beside him, exhausted and wrapped in an old wool blanket.

“My name is Caleb,” he whispered.

“Ruth,” she replied. “And you nearly ruined my floor.”

A faint smile crossed his face.

Over the following days, Caleb slowly recovered. He watched Ruth chop firewood, carry heavy water buckets, and tend her animals without asking anyone for help.

One evening, he asked why she lived so far from town.

“People are kinder when they can’t see you,” she answered quietly.

Caleb studied her.

“Whoever made you believe that never deserved to know you.”

Ruth looked away, uncomfortable with words she had never heard from a man.

But Caleb wasn’t merely grateful for her help.

He noticed how gently she cared for frightened animals, how she laughed when she forgot to be ashamed, and how loneliness disappeared from her face when she talked about the mountains.

For the first time in years, Ruth began to feel seen.

Then, one afternoon, Caleb spotted three riders approaching through the trees.

His expression changed instantly.

“Ruth, get away from the window.”

She looked at him.

“Who are they?”

“The men who shot me.”

He reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a folded document he had kept hidden.

“They think I have something worth killing for.”

Ruth unfolded the paper.

Her heart stopped when she recognized the name written across the top.

It was the name of the man who had once humiliated her before the entire town of Oak Haven.

And beneath it was a claim to the very land on which her cabin stood.
