YORKSHIRE TIGER ATTACK: POST-MORTEM REVEALS WILLIAM CHAPMAN DIED FROM MULTIPLE TRAUMATIC INJURIES — BUT KEY QUESTIONS REMAIN UNANSWERED
DONCASTER, ENGLAND — New details have emerged following the death of 24-year-old William Chapman, who was fatally injured after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster.
An initial post-mortem examination found that Chapman died from multiple traumatic injuries following a physical encounter with an Amur tiger named Altai. The findings were presented at the opening of an inquest at Doncaster Coroner’s Court on October 15.
However, officials have not yet released a complete medical assessment detailing the full extent of his injuries.
WHAT THE INQUEST REVEALED
According to information presented at the hearing, Chapman visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Saturday, October 10.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., he climbed over two fences and entered the tiger enclosure, known as Land of the Tigers.
Coroner’s officer Caitlin Brookes told the court that the tiger approached Chapman and that the ensuing physical contact caused multiple traumatic injuries, which rapidly led to his death.
Park staff secured the animal, while emergency services attended the scene. Paramedics confirmed Chapman had died at the wildlife park.
Although claims have circulated online suggesting that he suffered 12 broken bones, that specific figure has not been confirmed by officials. The coroner’s office said it was still awaiting a more detailed report about the extent of his injuries.
For now, the initial post-mortem findings establish the broad cause of death, but further medical evidence is expected to provide a clearer picture.
QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
The inquest also heard that Chapman had a history of mental illness, had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced previous episodes of psychosis.
He had been under the care of adult mental health services in Doncaster. Despite this history, the court was told that he was considered highly functioning and independent, with no care requirements.
His family had previously raised concerns about his contact with mental health services.
The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has launched an investigation following his death. The purpose of that inquiry is to examine the circumstances surrounding the support he received.
THE FAMILY’S HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTE
In a statement following his death, Chapman’s family described him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” who was dearly loved.
The family also spoke about the significant mental health difficulties he had experienced over a number of years.
Their loss has brought renewed attention to the circumstances leading up to the tragedy, as well as the importance of understanding what happened before Chapman entered the enclosure.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO ALTAI?
Following the incident, many members of the public questioned what would happen to Altai.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park later confirmed that the tiger was safe and well and would not be euthanised as a result of the incident.
The park also said it was continuing to assist South Yorkshire Police and other relevant authorities with their enquiries. Staff members affected by the incident were being offered specialist trauma support.
The wildlife park reopened on October 16 after working with the relevant authorities.
THE INVESTIGATION IS NOT OVER
Several questions remain unanswered, including the complete medical details of Chapman’s injuries and the circumstances surrounding his entry into the enclosure.
Doncaster Council is conducting a health and safety investigation, while the coroner’s office is awaiting further information.
A full inquest is scheduled for March 18, 2027, when more evidence is expected to be considered.
For now, the confirmed findings remain limited: William Chapman died from multiple traumatic injuries after entering the tiger enclosure. The widely shared claim about 12 broken bones has not been officially verified, and no complete account of the incident has yet been established.
As the investigations continue, Chapman’s family is left to grieve a young man they described as bright, warm and deeply loved.
