A Life of Science, Courage, and Lasting Impact
Sammy Basso was one of the longest-living individuals with progeria, a rare genetic condition that dramatically accelerates aging. He passed away on October 5, 2024, at the age of 28, leaving behind a legacy far greater than the years he was given.
Despite the physical challenges he faced from an early age, Sammy refused to let his condition define his limits. Instead, he pursued knowledge with determination, earning a master’s degree in Molecular Biology. His academic journey was not only a personal triumph but also a meaningful contribution to the scientific community’s understanding of progeria.

Sammy was not only a researcher but also a passionate advocate. He founded the Associazione Italiana Progeria Sammy Basso, an organization dedicated to raising awareness, supporting patients and families, and promoting research into the condition. Through his work, he helped bring global attention to a disease that affects only a small number of people but carries profound challenges.

More than his achievements, Sammy will be remembered for his mindset. He embodied resilience, curiosity, and purpose. His life demonstrated that even in the face of extraordinary difficulty, one can create meaningful change, inspire others, and contribute to science and humanity.
His story continues to resonate as a reminder that impact is not measured by time, but by dedication, courage, and the willingness to make a difference.
