A DOG ATTACK LEFT 5-YEAR-OLD HUNTER WITH SEVERE FACIAL INJURIES AND A LONG ROAD OF RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY AHEAD

A GoFundMe has been launched for the recovery of a 5-year-old boy who was seriously injured after being attacked by two dogs.
Hunter Callender, from Michigan in the US, suffered severe facial injuries that required extensive reconstructive surgery after the incident, which happened when he and his sister were playing outside their grandmother’s house.

Two pit bulls jumped out of a neighbour’s car nearby while Hunter was with his sister, and rushed at him according to the fundraiser.
The incident left Hunter with several broken bones and deep wounds to his neck, head and face. His mother Ashley White told local news that he has been struggling since it happened.

‘He’s been pretty down. He’s very shaken by the whole event,’ Ms White said. ‘He doesn’t know what to think. I mean, he’s only 5 and that’s a lot to go through.’
Hunter’s jawbone, cheekbone and eye socket were all broken following the incident, and his right eye now has double vision due to the damage. Doctors also told the family that because the break to his jawbone is so severe, some of his adult teeth may not develop properly.

The young boy has undergone multiple operations, including a five-hour reconstructive procedure where plates and screws were placed into his face. His jaw will be wired shut and a feeding tube will also be used to allow the bones to heal.
‘We are only still at the beginning of his long road,’ his father Andrew said. ‘We would like people to understand how serious something like this can be and how much our son will have to go through in the years ahead.’

The two dogs involved in the incident were later put down, and the owner is facing charges related to not properly controlling a dangerous animal, according to local reports.
